Yes I am interested in the choice of that type of wing, with the split, it adds complexity to the construction so I assume the designer felt there is a performance benefit and I was trying to reason that out.
We'll surely wait for an answer from the thread opener, but I'm pretty sure that what the designer wanted to achieve is a lower wingtip weight which should translate in better snap capability (shorter wingspan and higher wing loading at the wingtip), while not giving up overall stability due to a larger wing.
That's my guess
