hkenvy was right about the collet being too short.
i changed to the one from the kyosho kit and all is good.

why the smartass question, I'm not sure. I was merely off
inside the clutch assembly with the factory motor collet.
Yeah, believe it or not I actually used a heating gun to warm the
engine first.....wow, who could imagine? TDC doesn't make the
clutch bell stop turning DUH.
