The sponson on mine are mounted on the side of the tub. When properly setup the prop shaft must exit so that the center line is even with the bottom of these ride pads. At the most from the top of my head it is about 1/4"-3/8" deep and parallel with the waters surface.

I've never heard of a submerged drive on a hydro before, if it is submerged it is setup wrong.
