RE: Hangar 9 F-22 Raptor PTS
I have read a few recent posts that are describing landing this bird. I love the way this plane lands. I can get real nice and soft nose high landings about 80% of the time.
the real key to landing this bird is throttle and momentum maintenance.
Due to prevailing winds our field has a right to left approach and a clockwise pattern, so that how i'll walk it through. I have 5 touch and go's in a row before having to run out of gas.
in the (r -> l) close pass, at about 50-70 feet i begin setting up the landing. I come down to about 75% throttle and begin a right hand turn to down wind leg. I ride the elevator inputs a little heaver here as i want the downwind to "coast." As the plane comes through the center point in front of me (l -> r) i'll start breaking the engine. What I want to do here is to get excess momentum from the down wind leg to bleed off. I start flying the throttle here to keep altitude and airspeed. I dont want the wind flying me. I also try to keep the altitude constant here, about 50.' The base leg is always one gentle turn. There was MAN article on this in the last few months. As i enter the downwind base 180 turn, I coast it through the turn. I have the plane at idle or just where it needs to fly through the turn. At about the last half of the set up turn, i want the engine to 'tractor' the plane. Its like flying the prop. My landing will be determined by rpms, not speed. As the plane comes out of the turn level up the wings, and increase throttle until its pulling the plane. With drops and half flaps at about 15-20 feet, add elevator to pull the nose up. Here the plane gets mushy. From my experience, this is where the body starts flying. Keep riding the throttle until ( and slight wing inputs, remember alway move the stick to the low wing as it is coming to you) until your close to the ground. I drop back to idle just as the mains touch. On grass, i can keep the nose up about 8 to 10 feet on roll out.
