I have laid up engine box reinforcing with Mat and epoxy resin, the binder in the mat is starch and although it doesn't melt in clear like poly it still bonds together, just a bit cloudy. Layer cloth, mat, cloth gives good thickness, strength and light weight. Carbon cloth on the outside looks trick.
