Do you know how to fly a rc helicopter? If not then I would strongly advise you try to make an autonomous helicopter, it could be dangerous if you don't know the basics of controlling a rc helicopter. If you do know how to fly one, then disregard my previous comments.
I think you should start with a coaxial helicopter (esky lama), this would make it more stable inflight and easier to control. You could get a hobby grade one for $60-100. If you are successful with that, then move on to a fix pitch or collective pitch.
Since it is an autonomous helicopter, i would suggest buying the biggest that you can afford.
