It is usually good to snug it up as far as it will go, and then maybe back it off maybe up to 1/2 of a turn. You will know if it's slipping when you run the car that's for sure. If it does, then don't keep running it, or it will melt the gear quick. However, you certainly don't want to torque the thing enough to where it either snaps off the head of the bolt as some have done, or cracks the glue that holds the metal plates to the outdrives...
