Television emits 1.2ghz aircraft distress signal
Seems there's this fellow in oregon, somewhere, I didn't catch that part. But what the deal is that this fellow's television was, for some strange reason, sending out a beacon signal on 1.2 ghz! [X(] According to the news story, this is an aircraft locator signal in the event of a crash. The FCC showed up on this poor guy's door step and DEMANDED he unplug the Television PRONTO. The television manufacturer has offered to replace the television, so that they can dissassemble his for further study.

No, this is not a troll [:@] I listen to Art Bell regularly and this was one of his beginning news items. It seems that there was some issue with a bad circuit board or something so they offered to exchange it and take it back to their test facility. They even said the name of the television company but I missed it and besides, it'd be a little like slander if I got it wrong.
You might be able to download it from the coast to coast website. It scared me enough that I got rid of the two existing units I had left, after I smashed em.....

Here's a link..........so THERE!

The newspaper article doesn't say anything about the company offering to take the tv back but that's what Art Bell said. Might be that this had changed by the time Art got the story.

In the Art Bell news piece it was stated at 1.2 ghz. My mistake. I just saw a post by a fellow that was in the AF and he says that 1.2 ghz is NOT for aircraft location. Sorry.

No, I heard this on one of the Network news stations, CBS, NBC, or ABC during the nightly news. Seems the FAA, FCC, SOB pounded on his apt door wanting to know where the distress signal was coming from. Supposedly it WAS coming from his new color TV. I dont remember the make or model.
Think he got it on Ebay real cheap or something.
Seriously, the story is real.

Even spark plugs have to pass FCC regulations for emission of EM signals. I sincerely doubt a television was sold emitting any 1.2 Ghz EM, or any other detectable frequency.
Troll?

I'm not sure whether the news paper article was incorrect or whether Mr. Bell was. I do know that he stated 1.2ghz because I've been experimenting with a few of those units and his frequency quote was what got my attention. He's also reputed to be a ham radio operator big time and I would think that his statement would be closer to fact than a reporter that might not have heard the information correctly. It would be interesting to know the whole story with complete facts.

Hi guys,
I first heard of this on the "Bob and Sheri" radio talk show. do a Google search for (TV distress signal)
and there are quite a few links to the story.
It was a Toshiba 20" flat screen, it also gives the guy's name and one story said he lives in Oregon.

RE: Television emits 1.2ghz aircraft distress signal
I smashed 2 of my old 1.2 ghz transmitters Delta......They were cheap anyway and didn't work very well most of the time. Now that I'm on 2.4 ghz with locked tuning I like that much better anyway.....
