Default Glow powered AP ship finished.

Due to the sudden demise of my Kadet Senior AP ship, I decided to take an old forty size trainer I had and convert it to AP. The plane is a World Models Frontier Forty. With a few exceptions, it's pretty much like the Kadet. I mounted the camera on the nose of the plane, using a lite ply and rubber foam camera mount that I designed. It has an onboard downlink. It's powered by a Magnum XL .40 and APC 11X4 prop. The engine and fuel tank and throttle servo are in a pod on top of the wing. The engine is also soft mounted, as is the pvc fuel tank pod. The pod has rubber grommets underneath it and is bolted to angle mounts on the engine pylon.
I've also added tall landing gear, over sized wheels, and STOL plates to the wingtips to enhance lift, and right now I'm considering some sort of flaps. Although I haven't weighed it yet, I'd say it's somewhere around 6 lb with camera and all. The wingspan is 63 inches, which will be a lot easier to transport than that Kadets' 80 inch wing. I'll let y'all know how it flies. Hopefully I can maiden it tomorrow.

Very slick set up. Hopefully, you have enough weight in the front to offset the motor pod and fuel tank on top of the wing, otherwise you will know it pretty quick

I had a ten cell pack for the video downlink and a six cell pack for the plane to use for balancing. I balanced it with the camera bolted on so that I didn't need to add any lead. It balances on the spar just like the manual says to do. I've had one other plane set up like this and sorta learned by trial and error how to get everything right. Other than different trimming issues, it flew just like it had the engine on the nose. This will give me a completely free frontal view.

Looks good! Much luck to you on the maiden! [sm=thumbup.gif]

What material did you use for the engine mount and wingtips? Kinda hard to tell from these pics...

The engine pylon is a pine plank I cut and stood on edge. The wingtips are some 1/8" basswood.
The samsung isn't glued to the mount, paleface. It's got a piece of receiver foam between it and the mount it's bolted to. I had to make an adapter plate for the camera so that the mounting bolt was in the center.

Here are a few more pics, after the decals and all that have been done. I've also included some close ups of my camera mount. The mounting plate is 1/2" dubro foam between two sheets of lite ply. There is a safety bolt that is also padded that goes through the mounting plate for added security.
I used a sixty size dubro fiberglass engine mount because it will flex just a bit and help with resonant vibrations. The camera is isolated from the mount with 1/4" dubro foam and the washer is also isolated with white foam. This should really cut down on vibration and it will give me an unrestricted view.

Since this camera is strictly for AP use, I just JB Welded a standard servo to the camera's case after I sanded it to rough it up. That camera only cost me fifty bucks.

my canon cost $365 OZ ABOUT $270us...but I want reasonably good quality vid AND pics, and the really cheap ones dont give me what I want...I'm not saying that your camera is no good , it will give you what you want . My original SAMSUNG A6, 6mp, had a great pic but the vid was not smooth at all, so lucky for me the shop I got it from had a policy of "swap it if your not happy" [8D]

So far I have flown a Samsung 201 Digimax, a Nikon 3700, and a Mustek DV 4000. My experience, so far has been that the real secret to getting good, fluid video is in the memory card. The Nikon was definately the "Cadillac" of the three, but unless you put a good card in it, it was no better than the other two. The video had that "webcam" quality to it but with the right card it rivaled my Sony Handycam. I am using a Kingmax Ultra Platinum SD card, with 10 mb write and 10 mb read speed.
I haven't tested my newest Samsung in the air yet, as far as video goes, but with the kingmax card it does very very well on the ground. For me, video is just something to toy with anyway. My real interest lies in the photos.
I'm dying to get my hands on a new camera I have coming. It's a Minolta Dimage, and although it only has 15 fps video speed, it will take continuous photos at 1.5 photos per second until you either stop it or fill the card.
I've found that continuous shooting gives the best chance of getting that "perfect" photo.

It's a 1 gigabyte card. It has more memory than my first PC. I did some video on the ground this morning with my 430 digimax, set to 640X480 and 30 frames per second and played it side by side with my Handycam and I can't tell much if any difference. I think that Kingmax Ultra Platinum card makes all the difference. I'd post the video on my website but I want to wait until I can actually fly the camera and post that.

while it cetainly helps to have a fast card , and some cameras it may help, but it has been my experiance that unless the camera has a fast processor the best card in the world wont change the performace of the processor....the CANON IXUS can do 60 frames a second...the default is 30 fps and as much storage as to the size of your card.

Good to see ya back Top Glad to see that you're doing well with Uncle Sam. I trashed my Kadet video plane a couple of weeks ago and had to start completely over. Streamlined the design quite a bit and did away with anything I didn't absolutely need to cut down on weight. Most of what I really do is AP and it makes more sense to do it this way, without the extra servos and ccd cameras and such. Now all my recording is done on the plane and I'm using a helmet mounted LCD monitor to view the shots. Hopefully I can get some AP and AV done over the weekend. My AV cable finally came today so I'll get all that hooked up for some flying saturday. Combat engineer eh? I didn't know the Army still had trains............HAHAHAHA

Oh Gawd....I was trying to be funny and I didn't know that the Army actually still had trains. hehe
My son is stationed in Fort Sam Houston in Texas. He's going through the Warrant officer program.
On another note, I was a "bit" disappointed when my Minolta Dimage E323 came today. Although the page I visited said continuous shooting, I either read wrong or assumed that it went till it ran out of card. But it does do seven shots in something like five seconds. That's still good enough for one pass over a house. Actually it might even be preferrable because I've been known to leave a switched flipped in the wrong position and forget about it. At 1.5 photos per second on high res, it would eat up a big card pretty quickly. [X(]
It will do like ninety on 640X480 so it will still be good for webposting, and online AP contests and such. It's also a smaller camera than the Samsung Digimax 430 that I have for AV. Too bad the Dimage only does 15 frames per second. Other wise it would be just about perfect, almost as good as the Nikon 3700 I trashed.

I got the Samsung through a frieght liquidator on ebay. I know about those reviews. I read some of them. Although it is a little power hungry, it's no more so than several other digitals I've used. I have one of those CRV-3 Li Ion battery and charger setups coming for the Samsung. That should help with the power usage issues.
I also have a Minolta Dimage 323E and I just sent my Nikon 3700 in for repairs. IMHO the Nikon 3700 is one of the better digitals out there for AP and AV.

Well, although it's touted as having 30 fps video, the Samsung 430 Digimax is NO Nikon. It's still ok as the camera is nowhere near the Nikon's price. The colors are good and the motion is a bit hesitant, but not so bad that it's hard to watch. If anyone wants a copy of the uneditted video they can email me at randall.huston@gmail.com
It's 10.4 mb but I'm thinking of using my video editting software to crop it down just a bit to make it easier to send.

I went ahead and sent my Nikon in for repairs. Figured I'd take my chances and see how much it will cost to get the lense fixed.
In the meantime I've redone a few things on the video ap plane. I found a way to eliminate a LOT of weight in batteries by doing some mods to my tx. I'm also waiting on an OS .46 FX and 12X4 prop.
For my needs, the Nikon 3700 was perfect. The samsung, although not quite to the Nikon's standards, still has decent video. Video is something I do for myself and I'm not that terribly picky. The thing anyone else wants is photography. For that, the Samsung, the Dimage or the Nikon work almost equally as well.
