Onboard video from Turbine F-18
Hey everybody...
I've been lurking here for a few months to get info on video cameras and stuff. I Put together a system that records video onboard (no wireless transmitter yet) and I thought I would share a short clip of some of the results.
The airplane is a Tamjets F-18 with a JetCat Titan turbine flown by Dave Presta at the Tucson Jet Rally a few weeks back. Look closely and you'll see Billy Hempel's Eurosport fighter on Dave's six for a short time...he couldn't get a missle lock and Dave got away! The file is 19MB and seems to work with Windows Media Player ok...hope it works for you.
Hope you enjoy!

It's the camera from Mavin electronics....Board ccd camera, about 380 lines resolution. I made a small fiberglass aero housing for it and a mount that allows me to make some small pan/tilt/dutch adjustments on the ground. I put some clear radio box tape on the model where the camera is going to go, and then use silicone to glue the mount/housing in place.
The video straight from the recorder holds up pretty well full screen with only a little bit of compression artifacts. This file has been converted to mpeg1 and then avi, so it's been squished a little more.
The recorder? Well it's something that I found on the internet, but I haven't heard anybody else here mention it. It's an mpeg4 recorder from Neuros that records directly to a compact flash card. When it's set to 640x480 (highest res) and super fine (lowest compression, highest quality) you get about 1 hour of vid/audio on a 1 gig card. It's fairly compact and runs on 5 volts (receiver voltage) and comes with a little IR remote. Seems like it was made just for us! I'm hoping they will come out with an updated version that will record with even less compression and be even better! Maybe we should start sending them emails with some polite suggestions!!!

GR7Racer
Excellent video. One of the best I've seen in a long time. The speed makes it seem almost scale! I just wish I could hear those turbines!
Cheers, Brett

There should be audio with the video....you may have to crank the volume. You can hear the turbine spool up for takeoff.
After the pilot saw the video and the movement of the vertical fins, he went and checked out the airframe and found that the mounting for them was loose. Fixing it required removing the engine and bypass tube so the airplane was grounded for the rest of the weekend.
The recorder is a Neuros Mpeg4 recorder. It was designed to take a video and audio signal from a tivo or vcr and convert it to an Mpeg4 file. If you google Neuros and mpeg4 recorder you'll find it. It runs on 5 volts, but I've powered it with a 5 cell nicad pack which when peaked is probably closer to 7volts and it worked fine. It weighs around 4-6 ozs....it would probably be even less without the case but I haven't tried to take it apart yet.
I've got some video with other angles/mounting places on another jet that I'll try to post next week. We hope to capture some more video next weekend.

The recorder was powered by the rx batt pack....5 cell, 6volt.
Since the camera is 12v, I had to use a separate 2 cell lipo pack to power it.

RE: Onboard video from Turbine F-18
sweet! it sounded like the real jet man love the sound
by the way im planning on getting something like that for this 1/4 scale sig piper cub that has a twin cylinder os 1.60 gemini will eventually replace it with a four cylinder four stroke engine and put the camera right at the pilots view. some day as i gather info on how to make a headtracking device i would want to make the camera pivot around just lioke ur flying in the cockpit of the pilots seat!
