Several factors contribited to the crash. If the hand off between control point 1 and control point 2 was done properly, the UAV would not have crashed. The hand off was performed by humans. Even the most prepared and well trained can screw-up. I do not disagree with bkdavy's recomendation, just pointing out it's not fool-proof.

In combination with the failsafes (which are usually anything but), proper voice communication between the two control stations, relatively low flight speed, and high altitude, should make the handoff easy to coordinate. Its a common technique in long range UAV operations.

Finally got to look at the video - is that a modified SPAD Debonair? Looks like a Deb with an extended nose to support a larger fuel tank and additional weight in the tail section for batteries and transmitters. Am I wrong?

That is COOL ! I didnt even know something like that existed [X(] I am a ham, but dont know anything about packet radio. I could get a 2 meter radio anywhere, it would make a great way to keep track of the plane.

Here is a screenshot from a couple years ago of one of my flights.. I used the audio side of the AV downlink with GPS rs-232 hooked to a Byonics tinytrack3. On the ground you take the rx audio from the AV RX and plug it into the laptops mic-in jack. AGWPE software on the laptop takes the audio and via software magic, turns the audio into rs-232 data on a "fake" com port. You point the Ui-view software to the virtual com port and bing-bang, you got live tracking with a small dashboard! Woo-Hoo!
My little airstrip is just north of the RC car track.

Could have a much better map now-a-days.....

Great Video JettPilot (as usual) Is that a new airframe, it looks a little different than the ones you have shown before.

The Tiny Track 3 looks like a really neat thing, I will have to add that to my plane one of these days

The plane is a new one, I wanted something small that would be easier to carry around and setup. I still have the larger plane for longer range and faster flying. Here is a picture of the new plane.
