We have done it again... Another irresponsible and reckless video flight flying beyond visual range with video goggles [:@] Acutally, we have made lots and lots of flights like this, but I have been spending all my time flying rather than making videos
So for those of you that are afraid of and paranoid about anything new, you do NOT want to watch this. You have been warned, so dont watch this then and start biatching like a bunch of babies about how it almost gave you a heart attack and that you are now afraid to go outdoors [sm=47_47.gif]
For the rest of you that like new and interesting ways to enjoy your hobby, click on the link below, there is some really cool stuff in there ! This video was shot with a very light sensitive Sony KPC-650 camera, and yes, it was that dark when I landed [X(]

I loved it.
Do you have details on the setup you are using?
The videos are excellent, and your radio seems to work very well.
Also, how do you get the speed, alt, and heading to display on screen?
I have an ameture radion license, so I could most likely get the same equipment you are using. I am interested in setting up a plane just like yours.

This is amazing JettPilot. I have one question though: how do you know that you are still in radio range while you are flying?

Glad you liked it
The data is from a GPS imposed onto the video.
The video transmitter is a 1000 mw BWAV 2.4 ghz transmitter.
The radio is PCM setup with fialsafes and autopilot. If I get out of RC radio range, the plane immidately levels out and starts a turn towards my location. It is very obvious when it happens... And it happens a lot as I get to the edge of radio range. I have recorded the plane going into failsafe over 100 times durring some flights, but its no problem.

GPS gives height and speed? How does that work?

What has the range been usually?

I have not gone to the absalute limit *yet*
Three miles was no problem for the 1000 mw setup, but its altitude dependant. The lower I go the range definately goes down. I will try a reallly long range flight one of these days, but I am being very careful as I do not want to risk losing my plane [X(] Can you immagine trying to look for a model airplane that you know went down 5 miles away, good chance of never finding it [:@]
I will post my results here when I stertch the range to its limit.

Put one of these out on a wing tip http://www.byonics.com/microtrak300/
See if your local hams have arps, might even be tied to the internet and use www.googlearps.com
(wish I had one in my 4-runner that was solen a few weeks ago!)
edit: If your HAM's don't have aprs, you can connect a 144.390 MHz rx to a laptop and track it yourself.

With a local rx and a TNC or AGWPE, you can track real time, and would also have EPIRB functionality if needed.

I noticed that your altitude was realistic. I too have the Intitutive Circuits OSD GPS with Altitude. Is your altitude in meters or feet? Also how did you modify the NMEA sentence to output your actual height vs height above sea level?
Also what GPS are you using?
thanks

That is a Garmin Gecko 201. The bad part about that GPS is that the update rate is once every 2 seconds [:@], but it does waypoint tracking...
The Garmin 18 is better at update of once every 1 second, but no waypoint programming...
The altitude is in Meters, and it is above sea level, I no of no way to change the NEMA data.

Might I recommend that if you insist on doing a range check of the system, rather than relying solely on the failsafes, you should have a second transmitter and pilot located downrange, at the approximate location where you expect to lose contact. Be in cell phone contact with the other pilot. If you lose control, a quick switch on by the alternate pilot could save your plane. They could either fly by your command to get the plane back in range, or fly to gain visual contact, and land it.

Good idea. Both transmitters would of course have to be on the same channel. And depending on the type of receiver you're running, they may have to be of the same brand/model. A lot of the new receivers have "DSR" (Digital Signal Recognition) and other types of technology that recognize the frequency shift, number of channels being transmitted, etc. They lock on to this signal when first powered up.

Switching control points is what caused the last boarder patrol drone to have an unplanned landing...
