While I found that it appears that he more or less only flew level for a few seconds instead of demonstrating an ability to climb it's a great first start result. With some more optimizing and perhaps the addtion of a stoker we may yet see a human powered ornithopter lift off, climb to a modest altitude and make a circuit before landing. But again I stress that none of this takes away from the fact that they came up with a design that produces enough efficiency to actually fly under its own power. Truly amazing.

They did good.

I'd like to see the plans of the mechanism that created the flapping. It said he pedaled and "pulled on the wings" to cause the flapping. Wonder if the pulling was steering input, although there was a rudder. Which probably wasn't steered with his feet.

I saw this a few days ago and it was pretty neat! Wonder if it can ever be man-powered without having to be towed first? The best person to do this would be a professional cyclist. One with a VO2 max off the scales!!!!!
