Double Vortex Generation
1 Attachment(s)
I found this photo in the November 2003 issue of RC Model World, a very nice English (United Kingdom type of English) produced magazine. It also has a columnists named Alasdair Sutherland who writes the Aerodynamic Forum, one of the better aero columns I have ever read (unfortunately one of the few also).
Anyway the photo shows a double helix vortex. The strength and separation of the flow near the tip is amazing. |

Here is a bigger photo I think!

RE: Double Vortex Generation
That looks like the rearward vortex is being formed at the outboard edge of a trailing edge flap, and the wingtip vortex is curling around it. What type plane is this? Looks like maybe a Tornado?

RE: Double Vortex Generation
Yep, sure looks like the drooped leading edge is forming a leak point that is producing the front trail and the other is coming off somewhere near the rear of the tip.
Great photo Ben. You can sort of guess at the angle of attack in this turn based on the divergence angle of the votices to the wing as well. |
