Falling Sideways

I've got a converted walmart glider that i was flying today it was going quite well when all of a sudden it stalled in a turn and fell straight sideways with absolutely no forward speed whatsoever. It did this probobly 40 feet straight down then it fell out and went straight.

I think that is a Wal-Mart feature --

With no airspeed, any direction is possible.

Sounds like they don't have a large enough fin and not enough dihedral. It IS a toy after all.

Cool!!! I hope my new funfly can do that! What mixes you using to get it to do that;)

ha ha i figured it out actauly! Just mount your motor real loose with hot melt glue when it gets hot enough it falls out and pulls your plane all over the place! It did it again today but more of a loop/roll/flatstall mix right into a flagpole so now i need a new glider (ouch my poor wallet:))

On a side note it was flying absolutley great before that happened. The elevator has a bit too much control since it's a really short plane with huge 45 degree throw elevator he he but it's good for getting out of those strange accidental falls. I'm definelty getting another one but mounting the motor better.

Got a picture of the "wal-mart" glider. I'd like to know what you are talking about.

OK, two things you need to do.

First of all your elevator is way too wide. Cut it down to about 1/3 the width it is.

Second, the ailerons should probably be a little narrower and go out much futher. Make them long enough to reach the part where the wing starts to curve up to the tips.

Note how the wings are drooped? That is going to tend to make the model sideslip like you described. Adding up elevator a little sooner in the turns will help a lot. I suspect you roll the model and then apply elevator after. You need to blend the elevator control with the roll maneuver better and that will help prevent the side slipping. If it's hard to do then try adding some dihedral so the wings are angled upwards instead of drooping.

Thanks for the info! I've increased the vertical fin in the rear I'll lenghthen (sp) the ailerons before my next flight. Also I can't realy increase deihdral on it without getting a new one because my wing has several wooden sticks glued into it with and it glued to the airframe also.
