balance off - down thrust or try again ?
 

I thought my high wing plane had the balance correct and I was about to add down thrust in the wings . Flying characteristics included steady climbing , full down elevator and it would still gradually loop . Airelons were set correctly . When I re-cheked balance I was nose heavey by almost 2" on where my battery should be with out fule . Before I fly again do you think I shoudl add down thrust or will the now corrected balance make it fly some what levil . Its a old time WW! flat bottom air foil but it seems to climb way more then any trainer I have had with the same air foil .

If adding down thurst is there a science to how much to add and at what increments ?

It sounds like you have too much positive wing incidence.

Does the plane still climb when you cut the throttle? If so, you definitely have a problem with the wing / stabilizer alignment. You should pack up the trailing edge of the wing and try again.

If it doesn't climb when you cut the throttle, put some down thrust on the engine.

Thanks Dave , now I have not tried this since balanceing but when I cut the throttle it would still climb gently but not as sever , when cut the throttle all the way it would sink but was a real floater .

If I add the wing incidence should I move the battery forward a little or leave it in balance ?

The effects of a change in wing incidence and change in balance are independent of each other, so you should really only change one thing at a time. This actually applies to all aspects of trim changes or you will lose your way and never get to know what the problem is!

I would recommend you change the wing incidence (1/8 inch strip under the trailing edge is ample to start with) and use the balance point recommended in the manual. Any change to the balance point can be addressed when the alignment problem has been solved.
