Leading edge slots
HI All"
I need help, here's the deal, I'm building a 82" Me 162 Komet. The plans do not show the slots in the wing that were in the prototype but I want to put them in. I can get the location from 3-views and building them shouldn't be any problem as long as I do it while building the wings. However here's the rub, what should the cross section of the slots be? Should they have a shape like a leading edge? What angle from bottom to top? Are the openings the same size on top and bottom? Anyone know where I can find a cross section or more info on slots?……… HELP PLEASE! Frank |
RE: Leading edge slots
You should be able to get alot of info by searching this forum for slot and slat. - Yes, the 'main' part of the wing - the part behind the slot - should have a smooth leading edge shape. - The duct should be converging, so that the outlet is 1/2 - 1/3 the area of the inlet. The slot turns the air from an upwards direction to a direction tengential with the skin. - The front and back edges of the slot inlet are rounded smoothly into the skin mold-line. - This results in the slot having a shape like a bent bell-mouth. - You could also look at it as an airfoil with a tiny , highly cambered airfoil in front of it, angled down 45 deg or so. If I was at home, I could probably post a good cross section. |

John:
Thanks I did find some info from a couple of years ago on thesite it was a big help as is this from you. The info that the outlet sohold be 1/3 to 1/2 of the inlet was especially helpfull. Think I'll be able to do it withut much trouble, thanks. Franl |
RE: Leading edge slots
I completed parts for the Komet based upon the Dennis Bryant plan. He found that the slot was only effective beyond about 60% of the winghalf. There is also a significant amount of wing warp for stability purposes on this particular A/C which has to be dealt with also, and that affects the opening of the slots.
