wing loading
I was looking at a Chief aircraft extra 330 but I thought the wing loading was a little high on it .would this be a big factor to consider? Her are the specs for the plane 72.5 wingspan
64" length weight 10.4-10.6 837 sq inches wing area 31.49-32.14 oz/ft2 2 c 108-160 4c 120- 140 Most planes I see are alot less wing loading |
RE: wing loading
The good wing loading range of our models varies with size. What is light for a 100 inch span aerobatic model would be deathly heavy for a 15 powered one. It's that ol' "scale effect" thing working again.
So you need to compare apples to apples and look at other similar models of the same wing area give or take about 10% size. If it's on the heavy side of the range for this size category then it's heavy. |
RE: wing loading
Those numbers don't seem right. A 72.5" aerobatic model would typically have a good bit more area than 837in/sq. That amount of area isn't much more than many .46 sized 3D models.
32oz/ft on that area is more in line with a warbird...not an Extra. Given the specified engine range...the model has got to be a real brick. I'd double check those figures. |
RE: wing loading
Is it an ARF or a kit.
I went to Chief's website and did a search for Extra 330 and only found 4 Extras. One is a little electric. The other three were a Lanier 87", a Chief 77", and a CarlGoldberg 77" and those all had wing areas over 1100sq". Who made the airplane you're looking at? |
RE: wing loading
It is an extra 300s 140 and I guess chief aircraft make it thats what it is under. I dont know if it makes any difference but the wing loading has a 2 after it. it says 31.49-32.14 oz/ft2 maybe that means divided in half I dont know?

RE: wing loading
No, that last "2" is indicating square feet as in ounces/square foot.
Link to Chief in question? http://www.chiefaircraft.com/rcmsec/...Extra300S.html Off the top of my head I'd say that this seems a bit on the heavy side for wing loading. But as I mentioned earlier you need to compare it to more designs in the same size class. Just a wing loading spec on it's own doesn't mean that much unless it's compared to similar models. |
