tip stalling HELP!
I recently built a plane from misc. used parts. It flies, but has a tendency to tip stall on landing. Any suggestions on how to solve my problem?

RE: tip stalling HELP!
Land faster. :)
Don't use as much elevator. |
RE: tip stalling HELP!
Check for warps.
Check the lateral balance. Check the aileron "neutral". Are they? and then, if you don't find anything........ Land faster. Don't use as much elevator. |
RE: tip stalling HELP!
As well, if the covering will shrink and hold the new shape you could use a covering iron to warp in some washout. But many of the commercial ARF coverings won't shrink with heat and some even get more baggy. If that happens then you're back to Paul's answer.
PS: OK, there's one other bandaid that may help. Add a spanwise stripe of electrical tape slit to a narrow 1/8 inch width to the outer 1/3 of the wing on the upper side about 1/2 inch behind the leading edge. Build it up with a second layer over the first. Yes, it needs to be this narrow so don't cheat. This is a turbulator strip and it may help delay the tip stall to a lower airspeed. |
RE: tip stalling HELP!
Is it always to the same side? If so the wing may be twisted. Use an incidence meter to check it.
And don't discount the turbulator strip. I had a slope racer that had a ferocious tip stall until I put a strip of striping tape near the high point of the airfoil. Then it settled right out. Dave |
RE: tip stalling HELP!
Tape a 12 in. piece of 1/16 aluminum tubing to the front of the leading edge of the wing on either side of the fuselage. That will sharpen up the leading edge and make the center section stall faster, maybe beat the tips to it.

I like TallPaul's answer the best.

RE: tip stalling HELP!
Assuming you have tip ailerons you can set them up 3-5 mm this gives washout.
If you have strip ailerons you can replace them with some that you carve from scratch so that they twist UP towards the tip. Both will reduce the tendancy to tip stall. |
