Default servos for 30cc

I am trying to figure out what servos work well with a 30cc plane weighing between 10 and 10.5 pounds.I am really looking for good performing hitecs or futabas that help with a tight budget.I have seen the 5645and just not sure how they would hold for aerobatic manuvers any decent servos for around 50 bucks each???help..

I think you need only like 90oz/in torque servos for 30cc planes. There are lot of choices out there and most servos fall in the $30 to $40 category for 30cc planes. You might put a hitec 7955 or 5955 on the rudder. I read that there is a problem with the new 7955 servos when using them on straight lithium batts with no regulator. I don't know if the problem manifest itself on 6v overtime. Hitec is looking into it but the old 7955 and 5955 are problem free. Personally, I would go with a ts-170 (old 5955 hitecs) on the rudder and maybe ts-150 or something like that on the other surfaces. A cs64 on the throttle, it's analog with karbonite gears and I had mine for 140 flights on my gas 50cc with no problems. I do run a gray nyrod for the throttle that seems to absorb vibrations. I have ts-170's on everything on my 50cc plane running on 6v nimh. Will definitely go with a123 batts in the future. My friend used the ts-150s on the elevators and ailerons on his 50cc electric plane with no problems with one ts-170 on the rudder. That's $245 bucks minus $35 tower member coupons for $210 total divided by 6 servos that's $40 per servo, not a bad deal plus you can take those servos and put them on the 50cc plane down the road. The ts-150's are futaba servos and ts-170 are hitec and both have ball bearings and have metal gears with ts-170 having titanium gears. You could also do better and or cheaper with other make/model but I'll let others chime in.

Forgot to say that reason I went with ts-170's on everything except throttle on my gas 50cc plane is because of low wear titanium gears. I think for a 50cc plane, the ts-170's are a bit overkill and you might save battery power by going with less torquey servos. My servos pull around 3.5 to 4 amps max in flight. Other brands you might try are hyperions, seiko, smk, power hd digitals, etc.

I agree with your thought but what is a ts servo.I did buy the wildhare baby edge today and definitelt dont need overkill servos.I do want a strong servo for the tail feathers for 3d ..but I am after researching finding a number of options well under the 50 dollar ceiling for 30cc.I also like your thought about building in torque for the 50cc planes.who knows after flying the 30 size I might try a 50cc.

Cloudancer,
I would be wary of non digital servos for an aerobic plane. You get what you pay for. If its going to be powered by a gas engine, I highly suggest metal gear servos. If you are interested I have some very nice coreless digital servos that are reliable and plenty stout for a 30 to 50 cc plane. If you are interested, they are 59.99 each. PM and I will give you the details. I have them installed in the Aero-works 30cc Edge and 50cc Sbach. The are very quick, center awesome, coreless, and digital. Specs are 170 ounces at 6v and .08 response time.

Brian, I sent you a PM about your choke mod....

Also, I'm considering the Power HD 8309 servos for the 30cc Extra. I'm not finding too many good comments about the brand on the forums. I saw the video from Redwing comparing them to the Hitec 7985 and it's impressive. However, they are trying to sell them!

What are your thoughts?

steve like you I have been researching for digital high torque servos for a new baby edge that wont break the budget..I thought I found them with Hs 5645's but some respected flyers say they dont hold center well and thats apparently true of the HD too.I did look at the tower brand and today discovered the MKS line..the servos have titanium gears//but are they reliable at 40 bucks.

I was told about 5485;s which havekarbonite gears at 89ounces.that doesnt sound good if you do fairly aggressive 3D.

I figure the rudder needs a strong digital servo.the elevators are split so maybe the 90 ounce torque hs 5485's??

has anyone got a recommendation for a newbie and any good reviews on mks.?

I just checked on the MKS servos...the mks DS 1210 runs 6v at 138 oz.torque and uses a titanium gear set.. I would rather go with titanium than say karbonite ..these servos are being used increasingly as better high torque servos . the cost at one site rc111.com was30.00 and in stock and usamks and TBM havem at 35.99 a good price.

anyone using them and have any advice good or bad??

Regarding the carbonite. Don't. They're brittle and can loose one tooth esaily without you noticing it - until you're heading downhill a little faster than normal and see that flight surface part company with the plane (flutter). Go with metal, what kind of metal let your wallet e your guide? FWIW

I concur .I just wanted someone to say the same thing.with big birds metal is truly the best way as far as I know.metal gears are with issues as well but you simply replace them once in a while before they become sloppy.thats why I am interested in the titanium gears as some pilots are telling me they exhibit low wear.

I dont want overkill either but if my choice means higher torque but in exchange reliability and peaceof mingd at these prices all up and flying its worth it for me!!

I am going to be using the 5645mg's on my 71" slick (DLE 30)....They seem very smooth, seem to center just fine and have a lot of torque at 6V. Although that being said, I am not a hard core 3D flier. The ONLY knock I have heard on the 5645's are they are a tad slower the say a 7955 etc. But for a good, budget high torque servo, you can't go wrong. I use 645MG's in my 60-90 Aeroworks Extra 300 and they work perfectly.

I.m with you! I just looked at a new servo called MKS..its a titanium gear servo and sells for about 35.00 and at 6volts torque is 138 oz.in.

I like that the gears are titanium as they alledgedly show low gear wear and my only thing with metal is you have to watch them as the gears do wear quicker than say karbonite but replacing a set of gears has become childs play and is simple to do. tower has titanium geared servos as well.and cost is affordable..love JR but the cost is on another planet at least for me..

I don't think the MKS is a coreless motor though. Also, what's the speed of the MKS at 6V? Which model are you looking at?

Right now I'm leaning toward Savox. Coreless, Brushless, aluminum case, titanium gears... The model is 1258TG. It's the same servo as an "Align" model. Hardcore heli guys use the Align brand.

I have 3 5625 mg hiecs that need a place and was wondering if I could use them for an elevator application.at 6volts they produce 130 oz,of torque..for my 30cc dle and aerobatics that seems to be ok right. If I get a 4th one I could put 2 on ailerons and 2 on elevators.believe it or not got a great deal on a HS 7955 for the rudder.

honestly do you guys think this will ok for a 30cc gas plane about 10.5 pounds 73 ws

I decided on MKS 1210DS digital servos for my ailerons.at 6v they produce plenty of torque(138) at a speed of .12

I know this is quite an old thread now but how did the MKS 1210DS servos turn out? Am looking at my 1st gasser as well, & looking at an Aerobeez slick 540 with a DLE 35RA.

Cheers

You might consider the XQ Power servos.
3015 puts out 202 oz at 6v for $25 (or you could go HV for 218oz)
4013 - 200oz $43
4020 - 300oz $49
They have great service from Redwing RC

I used SAVOX on my last two builds and I'm extremely pleased with their performance, they center well, are quick and I fly very aggessive 3D and they take the abuse.
