Detachable wings for Aeroworks PT-17?
I am the so-far happy owner of an Aeroworks Stearman that is as yet unassembled. It is obvious that my yellow beauty is going to suffer a helluve lot of hangar rash, carried in and out the basement door as well as my 6 x 12 foot trailer. Has anyone adapted this ARF so that the outboard sections of wings can be removed? If so, I would certainly love to know how.
Thanks! Jerry
Ps...
Nick Ziroli flew at our field one day and brought out his prototype PT-17, which is slightly bigger than this model. I was intrigued with how he could take them down and store the plane, on its landing gear, in back of his station wagon...next to a 100" Skyraider!
Thanks! Jerry

RE: Detachable wings for Aeroworks PT-17?
Hi, John...Thanks for the prompt reply. On a few occasions, when building a large kit like a Fly Baby or scratch plane, I'll redesign the wing, strengthing it and adding lite ply sister ribs so that I can use a wing tube an have the wings detach outboard of the fuselage. In the case of a biplane, I could make holding jigs to keep the upper and lower wing halves aligned and together as well as keeping the N struts from being strained. The thing is, without knowing what the wing ribs look like and how the wing is built, I can't tell if wingtubes are a viable change. I'm sort of "chicken" to do exploratory surgery on the wings only to discover it wouldn't work. I was hoping to get a glimpse of the wing ribs and/or some pix of an unsheeted wing. Would this be possible? I of course would assume responsibity for anything dumb that I did. Thanks again! Jerry

Hi jerry, We really try to stay away from doing stuff like this because if something does happen to the plane/someone/something etc. or anything else we could be reasonable for any cost even though you said you would take care of it. We dont have any "inside" pics of the ribs and under the sheeting....again please give me a call.
