Joe and Monkey,

There is another AW 75cc 260 post started several weeks ago. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_6356561/tm.htm That one is not as detailed as this build thread.

This plane is everything and more it's advertised to be. The plane flies like a champ. My CG was 1/4 inche aft of the 3 inch balance point. I found it to be the best landing plane I've ever flown. And oh ya, the plane hoovered with only a small amount of control input on low rates with my limited ability!

Couple of things to watch out for - there are 6 ply mount tabs that the cowl secures to. Two on each side and 2 on the bottom. All 4 cowl mount tabs on the sides pulled loose which left only the bottom 2 tabs holding the cowl on. I was very lucky that I landed before the front of the cowl made contact with the backplate. I posted some pics of this on the other thread.

Caution!!!! - these tabs appear to be glued only with not enough glue. I suspect there may be other reports soon as these tabs break loose and cause damage to the cowl.
The fix will be easy if you catch this in time. Pull them out if they are loose and reattach with 30 min epoxy.

The only other problem was the JTec muffler leaking on the DA-85. It was a defect from an improper or incomplete weld on the flange. The flange plate on the port side is welded to the muffler. The oil and gas was working it's way between the flange and the muffler and exiting out the bolt tubes. I was able to confirm this by placing a silicone tube into the bolt hole from the port side. I put my finger over the bolt hole tube to seal it from the outside and blew into the tube. You could easily see air mixed with bubbles exiting between the welded flange and the muffler.

It's made a big oil mess on the inside of the cowl. There are 2 of us at my field with the DA-85's and JTEC Pitts. Both are leaking from the bolt hole tubes. JTEC has since repaired the muffler but I have not tested it yet.

So, if this plane heads south, which planes sometimes tend to do, I would buy another to replace it.

Good luck - Jaketab
Great info, Jake, thanks! The JTEC mufflers on my EVO-150 do the same thing, in the same place, big mess!!!! I wonder if they'll fix those, too?

I wanted to try one of the new www.smart-fly.com PowerSystem EQ-6 units on this plane. They are similar to the PowerExpander EQ-10. The unit is an 8-channel unit and channels 2-7 are programmable. Also there is an ignition cutoff, a built in regulator for the servo power, and a failsafe switch. This unit probably fits the bill for a wide range of plane sizes and power needs. These PowerSystems will be on the market very soon... so I talked Smart-Fly into sending me out a prototype to try:

Thanks Monkey, for displaying the EQ-6 Smart-Fly sent in for me to try:

Mounted the included aileron control horns, 8711 servos, pushrods, and the included DUBRO ball joints. There's only the one aileron servo per aileron, so this goes real fast:

Joe Nolasco direct soldered the extension on for me and also soldered on a Dean's 1003 connector to the end:

So far all we've done is:

* cut out 8oz of wood from the fuse
* start to mount the engine
* mount the aileron servos and linkages
* iron down the covering
* install a few graphics

We gotta get busy. lol

Next we'll do the elevators and finish mounting the engine.

While you're waiting for us to get done... here our some of Monkey's favorite videos:

Hi Steve! Yeah, I think I only have about 6 hours in it and it's nearly done. Anybody who knows me has to be amazed by that, because I can burn up 6 hours just thinking about how I want to do the throttle, etc. lol The QBs are easy, but this one has really been easy for me, a true QB for me, this time. lol

Right... so anyway... me and Monkey got busy on the elevators::

We used the stock (included) control horns and stock (included) DUBRO ball joints:

As with the single servo ailerons, it didn't take long to complete this step:

Next I glued in the rudder hinges, these are the only hinges you have to glue in. The holes are drilled and the hinges included, though.

I gathered up what I needed to glue them in. 30min Zap Zpoxy. DUBRO reamer. Bamboo skewers from the supermarket (about one tenth the price of same from companies like SIG). Mixing cup:

I used the skewers to "press" Zpoxy onto the sides of the holes, and popcycle sticks to "press" Zpoxy onto the hinge. I run alot of throw and I've never had a hinge come loose. So, I guess I'll just stick with what I've been doing.. even though I'm sure there are other gluing methods that give solid results.

I use the DUBRO reamer to flare out the ends of the holes a little for the hinge knuckles:

Don't forget to lube up the hinge knuckles with vaseline or something. Otherwise glue will get in the knuckle and it will not move freely. I've been using this same tube of teflon lube for 6 years and it does a good job:

Choke and throttle servos installed, pretty painless, same setup I've used on other rear carb engines:

How's it coming along, Joe? Where do you think you will end up, weight-wise? I did a quick throwtogether on mine and I am showing 21.5 pounds, +/- 1/4 pound. This may sound light, but I actually thought I'd be lighter. I have gone to extravagant lengths to shave weight off this plane, and I have gone full carbon and have a 10 ounce rx/ign. power system (new A123 1100mah cells). I took 8-10 ounces out of the airframe, 2 ounces out of the motor mount spacer (made one out of end-grain balsa), and even went with titanium engine mount bolts to save that extra ounce! The full carbon setup, including spinner, knocked about 14 ounces right off the top of the finished weight I estimate that, in total, I shaved 28-30 ounces off of a typical setup with the above-mentioned techniques. I did, however, go with a KS95 can, which added 6 ounces over the Slimline pitts, so lets call it 1.5 pounds that I saved.
So, are you looking at about 23 pounds?

Love what you're doing!

Mine is 21 lbs 3oz all up with Truturn spinner and stock landing gear. I could get this thing under 20lbs!

Maidened today... this thing is locked and stable. 8-)

WOW! I'd like to see a pic of that scale reading - that's the lightest weight report yet! Maybe I just got a rediculously heavy kit? How much do your wing panels weigh, RTF? Mine weigh 2.1 pounds each.

Great job man! Your reviews are always great!

Rocco makes incredibly badass little planes.
Little? .40 sized trainers are little. You've gotten used to big planes man!

Is there a reason why your plane came out so nose heavy?

Hey Joe, if you don't like it, you can send it back to socal with Jbenson and I'll take it off your hands
After seeing all that lead on your tail, I am glad I went with a tail-mounted rudder servo!

I am trying to decide between this and the H9 Sukhoi for the 85, anyone have any opinions on which is best for 3D? I realize the H9 is not out yet and the 260 is all we can compare build quality with. The biggest advantages I can see is the H9 comes with a pilot and won't need a spinner and will be about $100 cheaper to buy for me... unless someone has a "hookup" for me at Aeroworks for a pick-up plane!!

I'm feeling lazy, bodywerks, lol, the wings are out in the truck... next time I get a chance I'll weigh them, though. I think I can get this plane a frog hair below 20 lbs. 8-)
