RE: AW Ultimate 20-300
Hey guys,
The manual says that the elevator pushrods should be 4" and that is the length that comes with the plane. The first pic shows the pushrod that comes with the plane, obviously too long. 2nd pic is using a 2 1/2" pushrod. 3rd pic is the 2 1/2" pushrod held next to the aileron linkage. The 2 1/2" pushrod will work fine for all of the linkages.

At least my pushrod packages are unopened.
My LHS will exchange them for me, they are good guys. That and I am buying the plane through them, so they better exchange them. Or they will have a nice 20-300 left sitting in their store for sale
No, they are good guys. Shouldn't be any issues.

If you get the titanium ones for the ailerons be sure to get them at 2 1/2" and not at 3". The titanium ones have a shorter threaded section will be too long at 3". While I really like the titanium pushrods, and use them for all of my planes, I really don't see much of a reason to replace the ones that come with the plane (other than the too long elevator ones).

The 3 inch kit supplied pushrods on the ailerons. Are they a true 3 inches? +/- ??
Are they bottomed out in the ball links, or do you have some room for some fine adjustments?
Here are a couple of pics of the Hangar 9 Ti Links

Hey JT,
You are doing an excellent job. This is going to be a lot better with all the great info on the forum. I am using a smartfly power expander plus with TMB 2600mah lilon batteries and JR921 2.4g receiver. It looks like a tight fit, the pull-pull rudder takes up a lot of space.

Bdegan,
Here's 2 pics of the stock aileron pushrods.
George,
Thanks, this plane is going to be really nice. I have to say it again, this is my first Aeroworks plane and I'm very impressed! I do think the stock 3" rods are a little long and that a 2 1/2" rod would be better, plenty of thread engaged. The 3rd pic is showing a 2 1/2" rod held beside the aileron linkage. My stock rods are bottomed out and there is no more adjustment, but they are usable (barely). That Smartfly stuff is very nice, I've used some of it before. I haven't decided exactly how i'm going to do my batteries on this plane because I've got to have power for the smoke pump too. I'll probably use 2 2300mah A123 packs with the ignition and smoke both pulling off one pack.
Aeroworks and Mark
I really don't need the replacement rods, I used some that I already had. If you haven't already sent them, save them for the next guy.

Length is bang on for the stock rods. There is almost 1/8 inch extra thread on each end of the stock rods.
I guess I will exchange the ones I have and get 3 pairs of the 2-1/2.
At least it won't cost me any extra money, I should even have a couple dollars credit

I was originally going to use a Smartfly power expander pro, but came across a great deal on a Spektrum AR9100. So I got that and sold the Smartfly.
I plan to use 2 1100 A123's for the flight system and possibly a small 3 cell LiPo to power a smoke pump later on.

Thanks, I placed an order with Chief Aviation for 3 pair. I will know tomorrow if they have them in stock. I always wanted to try the H9 pushrods with that neat little wrench.

That sounds like great setup. I have not heard of any problems with the batteries or receiver. I am thinking about that setup in my next plane.

RE: AW Ultimate 20-300
Just looked up the power draw on my smoke pump and it doesn't use much power at all, so I think I will start with a 2300 pack for the receiver and an 1100 on the ignition/smoke. Anybody see anything wrong with running the smoke and ignition off the same battery using two switches?

I would use two batteries and two switches. If the pump stuck on, it could drain the battery and kill the ignition. Also all ignition circuitry should be isolated. The smartfly sport plus has the fiber optic ignition switch built in.

RE: AW Ultimate 20-300
George,
I see your point but this pump only draws a max of 150mah, so it would take a very long time to drain an 1100mah battery. I found another thread where some said he has done it with no problems so I think I'll try it. I'm adding more weight with the smoke system than I normally like so I'd really like to save a few oz where I can. Got a little more work done, wings and stabs are finished, ironed all the covering, and loctited the center cabane bolts. I'm going to use Smartfly equalizers on the ailerons and I figured out where I'm going to mount them and ran the extensions for the upper wing ailerons. Need to go get two B&B 16oz mastertanks, I really don't like tanks that have stoppers. I think I'll blow off my normal Wednesday golf game, I want to get this thing together! Time for this boy to go to bed now though.

RE: AW Ultimate 20-300
Returned the Hangar 9 links today. They did not have any 2-1/2's.
But, there are alternatives from other companies that are almost identicle.
From my RC car racing days I remembered a company called Lundsford.
They produce Ti links in all sorts of lengths and diameters. My LHS had a huge supply of Lundsford Ti links.
I picked up a pair of 2-1/2 and 2 pairs of 2-5/8. Lundsford also makes 2-3/4, which I would have bought had they been in stock.
The threaded portion is a hair larger diameter and metric. But since we are screwing them into non threaded plastic, they will work perfectly.
So for those that can not find Hangar 9 Ti Links here is an alternative.
One more thing, Lundsford is the company that manufactures the Ti links for Hangar9 [:-]

I have installed all servos except the throttle. (HS7985 for ailerons, HS7955 for elevators). Ironed covering. I ran the new Evolution 58 engine today, it runs great. Next step is to mount engine and install the radio and throttle servo. The rudder gets a JR8711.
Everything is looking great.
