Actually by the Vietnam 'conflict' it was re-designated the A-1 series. The A-1E, G, H, and J were used there, based in Vietnam and Thailand. The E and G were the wide fuselage 'Fat Face' models and the H and J versions were up-armored 'Skinny face', narrow fuse planes. They were extremely capable aircraft, rugged, and reliable. They were able to carry their own weight in payload and had 15 hardpoints. Although the military planned on converting to all fast attack jets the success of the A-1 and the less than acceptable accuracy and loiter time of the newer jets led to the design and production of a new attack plane in the Skyraider mold, namely, the A-10 'Warthog". Even though it had a radial engine and had been in service for 20 years, the government seriously considered putting the A-1 back into production in the mid 1960's!
