Apparently there was a Russian plane based on that design that actually flew... I'm not sure who embellished the photograph with all the guns and turrets, etc.... but if I have my facts correct, the 'basic' airplane flew with passangers for a little while before it crashed and was completely destroyed...

It's an artist's rendering of the Kalinin K-7, done about twice actual size:

Interesting, huge aircraft for the time. bout 91-ft wingspan.

Peter Garrison wrote about that in Flying Magazine not long ago, "Some people leave skepticism behind when they turn on their computers."

The Kalinin K7 was the real aircraft.
From a glance, it atually looked quite similar. The real aircraft did not include the cannons on the wheel sponsoons.
It was flown around the time of the Tupolev Maxsim Gorkii, but was less sucessfull. It made 7 flights, none with passengers, and had been experiencing vibaration problems and elevator flutter. This was most likely caused by the single mid mounted pusher engine. On the final flight, it experienced a boom failure, which led to it nosing into the ground, leaping into the air again, and crahing, Most of the crew died, and the designer, Konstantin Kalinin was later arrested by Stalin for sabatoge. The wingspan was 174 feet, 92 feet long, and a wing area of 4887 square feet! [X(]
The real aircraft had seven M34 engines, and the first flight was 1933.
The aircraft I believe N1EDM mentioned was the Tupolev Ant-20, which had a similar life, but managed to enter service. It crashed when a I-5 escort bipe made a barrel roll around it, and augered into the wing. Both the ANT-20 and I-5 crashed and everyone died.
Hope this helps,
Graeme
(I'm currently building an all balsa K-7 and ANT-20 for electric RC as we speak!)
