Sigs Three Cub Models and pricing
I was hoping there would be someone here who might be able to explain the price differences between Sigs 3 Cub Kits. The 1/6 scale (71" wingspan) cost $94.99, the 1/5 scale (84 1/2" wingspan) cost $240.95 and the 1/4 scale (105" wingspan) is $245.49. I tried calling Sig but the customer service had no explanation. I don't see any significant difference in materials supplied, unless I am missing something.

Whereas I have been around the block a couple of times :) the 1/6th size was introduced WAY BACK....in the '70's if not before (was it a Berkley kit redone???) and is/was die crunched. The 1/5th scale is lazer cut which might make it a bit costly to manufacturer (plus it has some good engineering in it)...the 1/4th I don't have a clue - LOTS of wood (die crunched???).
As always, I could be wrong! |
You can look at the manuals on the Sig website.
The 1/6 cub kit is mostly a bunch of sticks, with a few die cut parts like ribs. Not too expensive to produce. The 1/4 cub is also a bunch of sticks, but the sticks are bigger and longer, so the kit costs more. The 1/5 cub is mostly laser cut sheets. More expensive to produce (probably not that much more expensive.) It is much easier to build which makes it more desirable. The folks at Sig think those who desire it are willing to pay a lot for it. They may find that many people do not desire it that much or maybe that they do. Jenny |
