I just got back from a trip to D.C. and took a bunch of pictures of the WWII monument and the NASM (Hazy Center). If you get a chance to go to D.C. I highly recommend it. The airplanes in the Museum were way cooooool. I will post a bunch of pics if people want them for model reference:[8D]

The last itme i was in W. DC, I spent three days in the air & space museum. I was about 10, and it was the late 70's. I guess it's really time to go back! thanks for sharing! |

Yep, the new museum is going to be great once they get it filled! I thought having a space shuttle was pretty neat, but seeing the Enola Gay with the fighters under her wing was the most stirring.

Yes these are from the new Smithsonian Hazy Center; these pictures just don't do it justice. I had a terrific time seeing these aircraft up close and in person. There were tons of bratty teenagers but that is to be expected at museums. Hope everyone enjoys the pictures...... I need to do my FW190 now that I got to see one for real on this trip......wowza!

I was at the NASM several years ago and I spent the whole day there looking at all the planes and artwork. I took a ton of pics too. It looks like some of the planes that were at the NASM have been transferred to the Hazy Center. Between the two museums I could easily spend a week! :)

What is even more amazing is that the Paul E. Garber Center where most of these planes were stored is still full. This only made a small dent in the collection. They had a piece on, I believe it was PBS, in which the Garber rep said that they could rotate 1/2 of the aircraft each year and it would take them 7 to 10 years to present the entire collection. And that, she said, was just a rough estimate. They would still have to send some items to the Air and Space just to get everything out once.

Mark:
The yellow biplane is the Grumman F3F, I think it was called the Gulfhawk, but that might just have been the one Frank Hawks flew for, believe it or not, Gulf Oil. The F3F was also the last USN biplane fighter. It was developed into the F4F, pretty much the sme plane except a monoplane. Bill. |

Bill Thanks for the histery lesson! Cool looking plane! going to have to make it to that musieum some day!

Mark:
Unless they have gotten rid of it, the original "Gulfhawk that Golf Oil had, is still in their inventory. Iy used to hang in one of the galleries of the "Old" Smithsonian. The currently displayed plane, in the earlier picture, could be the same plane redone in military colors. Bill. |
RE: Pics From D.C. trip
I saw the original Gulfhawks flown by AL Williams in the new Air and Space last April. I think they were called the Gulfhawk 1 & 2. Williams' third Gulfhawk was a Bearcat and it caught fire and was destroyed. The Gulfhawk 2 is really cool,a biplane, retracts and round engine!
