It looks like a Culps Special with an M14P radial engine instead of the Lyc. It could be a Steen Skybolt (R) as well...the only thing that has me stumped in the upper wing mounting configuration...both the Culp Special and the Skybolt have an A frame mount instead of the Stearman style, but other than that they look a lot alike.

I was thinking it was a Skybolt myself.

There is a name on the cowl, but even with a magnifier, I can't read it. BUT-- something about the gear, and the humpback reminds me of a Jungmeister!! Lee W. Palm Beach

You started the thread asking what type of airplane this is yet you are quick to say that it is not a modified Skybolt (R) model? I am a little confused...do you know what the airplane is or not? You do know that an (R) model is a radial powered Skybolt don't you? A very popular radial for the (R) model and the Pitts 12 is the M14P radial as seen on this bird.

I am not saying that this is indeed a Skybolt (R), but it does have come very similar characteristics although as I stated before there are a few things that are throwing me off. The one pictured below does not have the louvers on the engine, but it does have the open cockpit and you can see the similarities.

Chill dOOd! I love Skybolts, my point is that the tubby bipe pictured could not be any incarnation of a Skybolt! Also the Skybolt "type R" you posted looks like a Jacobs powered variant. ( I am probably wrong here, but it is not a Vedeneyev Engine, note rotation.
I do not know what it is, just found it while surfing, thought it was cool and interesting, wanted to share,,,.[sm=wink_smile.gif]

It is a Russian aircraft (flag on tail) and I think we are clear on the engine. It is not a Skybolt as the top wing is straight and the center mounting is not the same. I scoped in on the name and it is in Cyrilic. Most of it is too blurred to read, but the first letter is a Cyrilic "F".

Anyone else?

From the photographer,,,

"I looked at the red one and it has a name written on it in cursive Cyrillic - it says "Favorite F-1". In Russian. "Favorite" is a noun in Russian, so that may be the name of the plane. Interestingly, "F-1" is spelled out in Latin characters rather than Cyrillic. The red plane also has the symbol of the Moscow Aeronautical Institute on it. "
