Great job but, loosing power at ALT and loosing power during initial accent are two different animals. Not to mention the glide rate of the two planes was just a little different.:D

Don't get me wrong. I agree what 1549's crew accomplished was quite impressive. Having said that I feel that there were a lot of things that were working in their favor. The incident happened during the day, in VFR conditions with a huge (albiet very wet)runway right in front of them. A lot of the decisions that had to be made were pretty much set in stone instantly because of their altitude(or lack of). Most pilots would have opted for the river as well.. Beats the heck out of slamming into buildings! Basically all they had to do was establish the aircraft's best glide speed, aim for the water, mush it in and hope for the best! What happened that day in the Hudson was as much luck, as skill..;)

Oh and by the way. I'll bet the L/D of the Cessna 402 and the Boeing 757 are fairly comparable.

Not being a full scale pilot myself you may be right about the L/D of the two aircraft. You are also right about the luck/skill ratio of flight 1549. What impressed me most about Sully was the calmness of his voice listening to the recordings. He was also a cool customer in the interviews I have seen. His military training paid off big time.

Rocketman,

Sorry to disagree with you but "luck" has very little to do with the actions and decisions made by a highly skilled and experienced crew such as 1549's. Scenarios such as this are practiced so many times in simulation that "luck" as you term it is pretty much ruled out. And it was unkind of you to use such a term in conjunction with describing the crew's performance.

Guess I should have said "fortunate". They're fortunate to have not just departed JAC at night in IMC!;)
