Shuttle lands, wow!
Just watched the shuttle do it's last landing, I defy any Jet jockey not to have a chill go up his spine, superb, well done you Americans!

RE: Shuttle lands, wow!
They still have 1 or 2 more landings left... That was the last mission for atlantis though..
|
RE: Shuttle lands, wow!
I stand corrected. Still a great landing though! ;)

Pretty cool stuff! I was just there (NASA landing facility) bringing some cool stuff in for the "Space Boys" 2 days before the shuttle came in and they were getting really ancy about us getting out of there or else they would have to divert the shuttle because we were taking up their ramp:D

RE: Shuttle lands, wow!
yeah
only 2 left to go.. [:o] then no more space shuttle launches, and landings.. sad.. [&o] i will miss those wonderful old ladies... |

RE: Shuttle lands, wow!
I saw the Atlantis on the launch pad befor a launch. It looked great!!! Sad to see the space shuttles being put out to pasture without a replacement..

RE: Shuttle lands, wow!
I was at the Endeavours first flight, just happens to be driving by and decided to stop at the center, waited for two more hours then up it went, Amazing!!! you could feel the energy of the engines miles away, there was a moment when it went throug a cloud, it turned to the colors of the rainbow,

RE: Shuttle lands, wow!
I went over to Florida in Feb to see Endeavour make the last scheduled night launch at 4 in the morning, managed to get a ticket onto the NASA causeway looking directly at the launch pad, when it fired off it was one of the most spectacular and exciting things I have ever seen.

Insiders note: this is not official yet, but it now is looking likely that this wiil NOT be Atlantis' last flight. There is a move afoot to fly External Tank 122 (ET-122, the tank that was here during Katrina, was damaged, and is being re-furbed) on Endeavor's final flight (was scheduled for September) in mid November. Discovery will fly it's final flight in September (was supposed to be in July, but the AMS will not be ready) using it's originally scheduled ET. Then, a final Shuttle flight will be flown in 2011 using Atlantis as the Orbiter and utilizing ET-138 (the tank that Endeavor was supposed to use). Likely in June 2011.
I am keeping my fingers crossed...... |

RE: Shuttle lands, wow!
Our NASA liason for our mission said that when the program does shut down, it will put 23,000 in the local area out of work![:@]That just blows

RE: Shuttle lands, wow!
You should have heard the double sonic booms!! Was working outside here in Palm Beach County, FL and it scares the crap out of you when it happens. Very cool!

RE: Shuttle lands, wow!
The Space Shuttle did its job, and it wasnt very good at it. Not its fault though. It was a victim of a lot of bad management decisions.
Anyway, out with the old in with the new. Where's Orion at? |
RE: Shuttle lands, wow!
Always amazing to view.
What NASA does is the very height of human endevor. America should be very proud. Roger |

Anyway, out with the old in with the new. Where's Orion at? True, but we must never forget what brought us this far and the sacrifices that were made to bring about a very successful program despite all of the challenges and set backs. Besides, how else are we going to get out to Pandora like they did in that movie Avatar so we can meet Neytiri and the Na'vi girls? :D You saw what we flew down to their moon...;) The Shuttle is the best manned vehicle ever created thus far, (besides the F-14) ;), so until I see a big ol bird like they had in Avatar, with slide away HUD's, winglets, retracts and thrust vectoring like the Shuttle, then it would be nice to keep the shuttle program going. Not to mention, X-Plane Shuttle is one of the best Apps out there. [sm=shades_smile.gif] Ok, Extreme, Carrier, and Airliner are pretty good too...:D Have fun guys, stay proud.......proud that we can get to Pandora if we want, but they can't get here! :) Long live the Space Shuttles! Anyway, out with the old in with the new. Where's Orion at? That was a trick question.... cause the correct answer is: THERE IS NO VEHICLE LIKE THAT EXCEPT THE USA's Space Shuttle (and there never was)!!!! Sure, she killed 14 astronauts in flight (and several more folks on the ground), but when you are on the cutting edge of technological abilityies, the risks are high. And so are the rewards. As for Orion, the fool in the White House tried to kill it along with Constellation, but he has not yet succeeded. He may though. He is a president devoid of vision. He wants to throw some a bone and state that we will use Orion for emergency ISS return only. In all honesty, for our nation to go from a reusable winged space craft back to a ballistic capsule is embarrassing and represents a lack of vision..... |
RE: Shuttle lands, wow!
This president is full of lack of vision. This state is already dead from unemployment then he kills all those good high paying jobs.
Yes the shuttle needs a replacement. But it should not be retired until it has a replacement. Now the plan is to just just ride on Russians stuff. And imagine that they raised the rates for going to space a few months ago. So get rid of the jobs here and pay Russia for it man this president is looking out for us........................ |
RE: Shuttle lands, wow!
EXACTLY!!! But they say that they need the $$$ that it takes to operate the Shuttle to build a replacement. NASA's budget is about one half of one percent of the gross national budget. And he gives what, something like 160 billion to AIG?? What a fool!!! NASA's return on money spent in the last 40 years is incredible.
|
RE: Shuttle lands, wow!
The video of the landing was amazing....it was pointed 400 yards short of the runway until the last 15 seconds...then the pilot greases it, just amazing skills. I had nothing to do with anything, other than paying the bill....but that video makes me pretty proud.
|
RE: Shuttle lands, wow!
The commander normally lands the Orbiter, but he sometimes allows the pilot to fly some of the ride around the HAC. Tony Antonelli was the pilot on this flight, his second time into space (the final frontier). He was our rep from the Astronaut Office during the Return To Flight effort. We all got to know him pretty well. Great dude and as smart as homosapiens come. Makes you really proud to be an American to be associated with the Shuttle Program and folks like him!

I REALLY hope the replacement looks at least this good, because anything less would be downright depressing. KEEP THE SHUTTLES FLYING, afterall the future of mankind really does hang in the balance on this one. Without the continuation and advancement of the shuttle program, we really will be limiting ourselves to.......well.......the women on this planet. [:o] It would be really nice to meet the Blue girls one day! Unless of course, maybe, there is a secret program going on in the middle of Iowa somewhere and a gigantic Starship Enterprise is being built. Then I'll sit and wait patiently for a chance to meet the Green girl like young Captain Kirk did in that last Star Trek movie! :D Seriously though, I really hope to see the Shuttles keep flying, the sight, sounds and missions of those magnificent birds, never get old. |
