Default Why Doesn't The AMA and the Hobby as a whole market to minorities?

Seems like an easy way to grow the hobby, why are they afraid to do it?

Anyone can join our club. All races and creeds are represented.
If an AMA club did discriminate, they should lose here charter.

The last AMA marketing ads before Hoot Gibson featured FedEx pilot Albert Glenn. He and his son A.C. wrote the RC Aerobatics column for almost two years.

Sorry but I have no idea just what you are asking. In aeromodeling, speaking for myself and I have been into it for almost all of my 75 years, there are NO minorities, just aeromodelers that enjoy a commopn sport. Some have their own preferences in the different disciplines, some P&M at each other over and over, but when it comes to the last straw, all are modelers.

I belong to 4 clubs and I never see anything but aeromodelers. In fact as the CD of one club's late year-end War Bird Fly-In, I had the plaques custom made for the event. Here is the picture that was on it. Maybe I was guilty of a little sneaking something not exactly mine, but every pilot and lots of visitors thought they were great. The Red Tail Crowd is one of my favorite groups, and I contribute to their cause each year.

The number of "minorities" in our club pretty well reflects the local demographics. It would be intertesting as to why the OP would post this query.

I asked a similar question here a few years ago and was flamed all day. Eventually RCU took the entire thread down because of the extremely racist comments posted in respeonse to my question and because, (according to RCU), this subject was unrelated to the AMA.

This forum is full of older white men. Older white men are statistically the most racist demographic in the country. I would not expect a very positive response to your question here. However, I do not believe that the members of this forum are at all representative of the AMA population as a whole.

Perhaps when the bulk of the oldest AMA members have died off and the AMA population consists (almost) entirely of post-segregation era people , (slightly younger than baby boomers, (less than 50 years old)), the attitude in the AMA forum will change, ie. in 15 to 20 years. Until then, the AMA is what it is.

However, if the minorities that currently belong to the AMA were to press the issue in their individual clubs, (such as recommending an elementary/middle school that primarily serves a minority district) for that AMA club's outreach/TAG program, then maybe this ball could be rolling a bit sooner.

If this issue is dear to you, then you can make it happen. And I would wager that your friends in the club would back you up. Well, there is really only one way to find out.

I wasn't aware of the AMA marketing model aviation to any segment of the population. Have I missed something here by spending too much time watching the National Jumprope Championships on TV?

I am not sure what is going on here but aren't the club members AMA representatives in trueth. Our club has a pretty good mix of young and old, black, hispanic, and a few from other countries. I am not sure that I have ever seen an AMA event that did not have the same mix. also have not seen any flaming on this post. Is it possible that the OP has his own agenda?

Why in the world would you want to take a hobby that welcomes everyone and turn it into a special interest advertising agency that focuses on creating differences in members based on race for whatever objective you might think is appropriate. I certainly hope that the administrator closes the door on this thread and brings an end to the most self serving and insulting question I have ever read, anywhere, while involved in the pursuit of this wonderful hobby. Our hobby does not care at all about ones race, only whether you share in the excitement of model planes.

When I say market to Minorities , I mean invloving minority models and actors in their advertising efforts. When is the last time you have seen anyone of color in a Horizon or Great Planes ad?........

Oooooohhhhh, looks like somebody is being crushed under the chip on his shoulder.... I am totally color blind, but this has me thinking: What color are our members? Well, we got them all, except red (not counting them Irish here). So, yes, we need some native Americans to join our club. Not too many around, will have to research in the casinos they own...

On a serious note, we really have them all, Jews, Muslims, Catholics, and in between, black, Hispanics, Asians and white. We are the UN, and never heard of a problem with race on the field (this does not mean we do not have some racists on board), just that it has never been a problem at the field.

Odd suggestion...

Maybe they are all busy in national adds that pay more. To tell the truth however, I have never looked that close to examine race, ethnicity, religion, national origin - only sex.

Wow people actually want to separate the races even more?
you may be racist. If you honestly believe that anyone "needs" to acquire some minority group or more of a minority...you're a racist.

How about YOU, promote as you see fit. Though don't discriminate...promote all races equally. For example, have a Hispanic Sport Fliers...but cater to all races

If I were to promote White History Month am I a racist or am I just asking for equality (Black history Month)

really wanted to get on a rant about this...but I won't.

I would say the AMA doesnt do a great job of marketing the hobby period. With all the large sanctioned events across the country, how come none are ever mentioned in the national media. I would guess there are celebrities other than "Hoot" and DMX to promote the hobby.
