You know we often seem to be on opposite sides of issues...... but that was one GREAT post.
Could not agree more.

Thank You, I've had a tuff life, but wouldn't think one minute about doing it all over again. I've got a touch of emphysema an will probably not be here in 5-10 years, but I will die happy knowing everybody in my family can make it on their own with no help from us, an the wife will be took care of the rest of her life, although it won't be as easy as some would think.
She works part time at wally world for something to do an to buy groceries an pay part of the utilities each month. Here in the Ozarks, people just have a different attitude than a lot of the city folks that have had it easy and a lot of things give to them.
No regrets on her or my part on our less than fancy lifestyle, but we have each other, which is what really counts IMO...

RE: If ama ever goes belly up
Toolman, do you realize that almost 10% of the population of this country have lost there jobs? Do you feel that all these people are the dregs and are victims of their own poor planing! Wow, your life and mine seem almost exactly the same! I've been self employed 31 of the 41 years I've been out of high school! Things have happened to me that were a hard kick in the gut, also! I have worked hard my entire life, never getting rich; but, getting by! I've raised two boys, one of them sells cars for GM the other is a commercial sheet metal worker and was laid off last week! Not having been a union worker since the late 1970s and then only for 6 months, there is no benefits there!
Having been on unemployment since January, requisite to being able to collect, I must apply or send my resume to at least 3 businesses per week! I can tell you there is no work out there and I can tell you it certainly isn't the right time to successfully launch a new business!
I've pulled myself up by the boot straps, just like you and certainly don't need a lecture from anyone on how to get by in this life! I'm going to listen to what you have to say about these things, as much as your going to listen to me about attempting to use a little more compassion!

I had nothing against you one way or another until you directed this toward me, and I really don't know why you did.
"Got a smart A** comment for that?"

Not really....Maybe he thought I knew he was connected with GM someway. I didn't and was just using GM as an example. I woulda put chrysler at the time, but GM was easier to type

Well Toolman my comment to you certainly didn't come out of the clear blue! I have PMed you, asking what you want to do from here, continue or take a new tack? Lets take this offline, where it should be.

RE: If ama ever goes belly up
right, sooooo
Should AMA ever go belly up,
somebody is going to be buying MA Publishing at firesale prices.
However,
what if just prior to going belly up
AMA kicks MA out of the nest, and then 'outsources' a magazine for the members to MA.
How long will AMA be willing to send $1mil checks to MA for a magazine,
if AMA will be going broke in a year or two?

RE: If ama ever goes belly up
GM went broke from getting bled dry internally by profit takers on both labor and management. There wasn't enough reinvestment in the mfg to keep pace. The money hemorage was a runaway train and all you can do is watch it crash. The AMA doesn't have a lot of the same issues because of no direct competition, but the indirect competition with the rest of the economy and other hobbies might shrink the organization back to lower levels than you see now. In some parts of Europe, open land is so scarce that hunting is a rich man's sport. A day will come over here where suburban fields will be worth too much money and cost too much in taxes, then the AMA will shrink some more due to no fault of their own. The price of the large equipment can continue to go down, but future flyers will someday need to meet in the desert or on very exclusive local land which will further seperate the diehard hobbyist from the casual type who can take it or leave it.

I believe that MA will be taken over by the aliens from the show "V".
I saw this in my "Flash Forward" so it must be true. And John Locke from Lost will confirm this.
Will other posters please fill in the future in what you saw in your "Flash Forwards" about the future of the AMA........
THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE!

Brad,
If you dont want to take part in a discussion of how our 501 assets can be distributed,
great, DON'T!
Simple as that, just dont click on this thread anymore.
However,
if you do want to participate on topic,
we've read how the assets have to go to other NFPs,
just who is an NFP that would want to take ownership of MA Magazine? UMA? EEA? NRA? ... any other A's out there?

we know AMA's assets have to go to other NFPs,
so who is NFP enough to grab the MA publishing empire cheap?

Right. An I have a unicorn that eats colored marshmallows and poots a rainbow.
Someone start a real fantasy thread where someone sends money to the "NEW AMA COMPETION" * bells ringing, trumpets a-blowin'* and gets an insurance policy.
This thread does serve to show some self-described AMA supporters dreams though.
Dream on until your dream comes true. .......... Aerosmith? yea.

Robo-
"Why would want an "empire" that looses $1mil a year?"
it runs red now,
with (some ballpark round numbers) about 121,252 run off the press
and about 119818 of those mailed out to subscribers (members & non) and 396 sold non-mail,
and, as one guy mentioned, a Subsidizing ad rate card to help modeling advertisers as our NFP mission
but drop the 100k 'member freebie' copies,
add the... (how many folks here have been saying the magazine is worth paying cover for?) new paying subs,
and run Non-Subsidized ad rate card,
why would it be in the red?
Its an asset somebody(nfp) is gonna end up owning,
and they dont have to tank it on purpose to meet subsidy goals of its former owners.

Answering your question:
Because not all owners of the magazine will run it the way AMA has,
some might run it goaled to be a profitable part of their overall NFP.
We've already covered the $ and # details so I wont/cant rehash them.
.
Why would want an "empire" that looses $1mil a year? Maybe a company that's making money and wants to be a NFP?
Right. An I have a unicorn that eats colored marshmallows and poots a rainbow.

One thing that should not be overlooked;
AMA is a NFP 501 (c) (3).
Model Aviation is a wholly owned subsidery corporation, "non-related business" of AMA. MA itself is NOT a NFP.
If AMA was thinking about going "belly-up" there is nothing to stop AMA from selling off the subsidary corporation PRIOR to going into bankruptcy. Now just who might purchase MA and who might turn it into a profitable business, well, WHO KNOWS??? "Only the SHADOW knows!" [>:] Someone explain that to the youngsters!
