Jim Cherry Final Flight

From the AMA:

M U N C I E - It’s with sadness that the AMA announces that former AMA Executive Director Jim Cherry died on December 2 at his home in Panama City. Cherry had resigned his post in August to return to Florida to be with his family.

Jim was instrumental in several projects with AMA, including introducing AMA to the League of Cities, helping develop AMA’s reworked long-range strategic plan and implementing his Program of Work concept that helped guide the AMA’s staff of 55 at the 1,100-acre International Aeromodeling Center in Muncie.

“During his nearly four years as the Academy’s Executive Director beginning in 2006, Jim launched a number of important initiatives for AMA,” said Dave Mathewson, AMA president. “The entire model aviation community will miss him, and all of us at AMA extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Lynn, and his family.”

Jim was a good leader and helped bring AMA in new directions. He was always willing to take the time to cary on an active discussion of items important to the individual modeler and also the council. He will be missed.

This was posted on another list:

Hi All,

Jim was the brother in-law of one of my co-workers. It appears that Jim died of a heart attack and was found dead at his house.

While Jim was at AMA he did a lot to try to eliminate “good ol boy” networks existing there, which met with a lot resistance. He was a great man and will be missed.

Maybe Jims passing will answer some of the critics on these forums for why he left his position at the AMA. He may have know something none of us knew or needed to know...Either way he will be missed by friends and family. My thoughts and prayers go out to ALL his friends and family at their time of loss...
