your first post was great, but then you getting into a war of words in a thread that was over by post 6. It just becomes another AMA Section copy/paste pissing match. This Forum reminds me of that Owl eating a Tootsie Pop,, How many posts will it take to become another flame war?

Here's the reality of flying nitro in a park, That doesn't have a designated area for RC

Most likely there will be someone that calls the cops because of the noise, the cops, park ranger or some official will come out and ask you to stop. It may not be technically illegal, but it will disturb a neighbor, a busybody,, someone,, and there are noise laws everywhere, whether there's a sign/official park rule or not.

If you want to grow into the hobby, you'll have a much more enjoyable time joining a club and flying at a real designated flying site,,

Maybe that is the root problem here...that perception. As someone that has and does enjoy club and non-club flying, I can emphatically disagree. Sometimes I enjoy going to a school yard, park or some other non-designated spot and fly in solitude or with a few good friends... It doesn’t get any better than that! I’d hate to see the “must fly at the AMA club site” people short circuit that experience with the endless clarifying, defining and designating mindset that is continually push on everyone else... If you like painting with numbers...so be it... but that same old horse head portrait is mundane for some of us...

Well, I have contacted the two municipalities where I like to fly. The local law enforcement and local parks and rec noth said there is no ordinance against flying RC planes in thier areas. However, as some have stated before, the only issue would be if someone complained about it. This is actually pretty good for me as the nearest house or business is WAY far from where i would have my fly patterns. There is also some land locally where the local hobby shop guys fly too. I just asked them the basics and was honest, they were all cool and said just be careful and use common sense. I would imagine that to mean not flying at 3am over the closest house. Matter of fact, most of the time when I do fly my planes (within the last couple days) some small crowds have come by and thought it was great.

I have to give it to you bud. Several pot-stirrers have come to this thread and tried to derail it several times. I've seen numerous other propective members that packed up and left after a few back and forths. But you are determined to get the real information from the horse's mouth.

Most of the advise given here is based on solid logic. Some is based on personal experience. All of it comes from grown men that still play with toys. :D

So now that you have the basics, enjoy the hobby; use common sense and do not attract unnecessary attention to yourself or the RC hobby as a whole. I hope you know what I mean. ;)

One advantage of a club (speaking in general terms) is that someone is not going to start kicking a soccer ball in the middle of your landing area or do something else to unknowingly put themselves in danger. Its (usually) a (more) controlled environment

Glad to see more people taking up flying in the area. Ilive just down the road in Holly Springs. My son and Iwere into the electric trucks, but now I'm jumping into flight as well.If you haven't checked out any local clubs yet you should definitely come by SWAMPS that was posted above:

Great group of people, everything flies there from smaller to giant scale (nitro and electric).

Very private field, and if you decide to join you can fly anytime you want.

Well said man! I am enjoying the hobby. All three of my aircrafts have seen some small carnage (all easily repaired) and that is good I got the first crashes over with. I am learning to be more confident and am having fun too. Thanks for the tips man. :-)

Best of luck to you and if you enjoy flying alone, then do so and down the line, you will probably slowly move to participating with a club. I statted into RC that way. I was previously a hard-core competitor in CL Stunt and several Free Flight Events, but dabbled in several other CL/FF events. When I got into RC, I started alone. Then needed help, got some, and back to Lone-Wolf. Since I knew a number of modelers in the area, it was only just a slide to get into a club. That is when the hobby SPORT became really enjoyable.
There will always be someone you don't care for in a club. There will be many more that you become great friends with and then the in-betweens. THAT's LIFE!

Once you want to get out for more fun, if not already, join the AMA. Then start attending some of the various Club's Fly-Ins and Fun Flys. Lap up all the info and techniques you can, Be a friendly talker and you will have many opportunities to learn, not just flying but stuff you may wish to keep in your thinking pocket. You will quickly learn when and how to separate wheat from chaff. ;)

Now one piece of advice: When you join the AMA, they send you a large bag of marbles. Each time you attend a flying event, trade-show or such you have to THROW AWAY A MARBLE! It's TRUE!
Then once you have LOST ALL YOUR MARBLES, AMA MAKES YOU A LEADER MEMBER AND CONTEST DIRECTOR! YEAH they do! :D :D :D ;)

Flying alone right now is the only option I have as I am pretty new at this stuff. I caught on fast with my Spektrum DX6i. As for the AMA, I am still looking at their rates for students (I am 28 and in med school). As for the local clubs, we have one close to here and I am going to contact them. Thank you all for your input. Never intended to get anything started, but I do appreciate everyone's help and good advise. :-) Joe

dont sweat it, you didnt cause folks with existing baggage to come in here and pick at the guy they hate

Just remember-
The AMA is full of guys just like here:
Some will offer you help, tell you stories about the good ole days, and offer you one of their lil chocolate donuts,
some enjoy their hobby of controlling model aircraft,
and some enjoy their hobby of controlling the people that are controlling model aircraft.

jnatle3 listen for your best interest go to one of your local clubs , join AMA , you are covered with insurance , and you have a safe place to fly and enjoy with other fellow fliers like yourself , but it is your choice OK , there are people on here who want to bash AMA and i dont know why i have been a member for 20 years and have enjoyed every day of it , when you belong to a club sure it cost every year but that is for upkeep of the field , ours is 100 dollars a year and my AMA is only 58 dollars per year heck that isnt nothing for the fun enjoyment and fellowship with fellow pilots , guys at a club will welcome you give it a try !!!

when i first started i did not belong to AMA either we flew at a football and soccer fields , one of our fliers Bill flew his sweet stick into a brand new truck door , he had to pay for repairs of that truck out of his pocket , after that we joined AMA and found a chasrtered club to fly at , anyway im sure there are a lot of stories out there like this !!! Joe, get involved in a club. If you stick with this hobby long enough, you'll find that flying alone gets old. This hobby is just as much about fellowship as it is flying. Clubs will have members to help you with any issues, or questions, that you may have. With that being said, most clubs will require you to be an AMA member. It's all about liability issues, which I can fully understand. Just bite the bullet and do it.

It boggles my mind why some people here on RCU make such a huge issue out of being an AMA member. It is what it is, what it is!
