ama question

I am new to r/c airplanes and this website but both are great. My question is this, The airport that I have been taking lessons at requires me to have $100,000. in liability insurance to fly there. I am currently renting so I dont have home owners insurance. Does joining AMA cover this? There web site is rather unclear to me. Thanks in advance.

I think that [link=http://www.modelaircraft.org]AMA[/link] insurance (upwards to $2MM) is secondary to homeowner's, which you don't have, so we would assume that it would be primary. In flying as a club, the club has to list the flying site owner of note as an 'additional' insured party (at additional cost) for flying site insurance coverage. Additionally, [link=http://www.modelaircraft.org]AMA[/link] mandates guidelines for spectator and property separation as well as flying according to [link=http://www.modelaircraft.org]AMA[/link] guidelines for pilot performance. I am assuming that if you are flying in an 'unsafe' (by [link=http://www.modelaircraft.org]AMA[/link] standards) manner, that they may deny coverage in the event of a catastrophe. That being said, what's a modeler to do? Get renter's insurance with a special 'rider' for R/C?

*disclaimer, used to do computer work for an insurance company..*

GET RENTERS INSURANCE ASAP! unless you have absolutely no property and nothing to lose, it is a very cheap investment, $10-$15 a month. the cheapest policy gets you usually $100k - $300k in liability insurance and 20-40,000 in contents coverage. (nothing in your apartment is covered if it burns down, you are on your own. the owner of the building maintains coverage for the building, but couldn't care less about your stuff...)

I'm confused. Are you taking full size flying lessons or R/C flying lessons? AMA only covers models.

You could just go fly with these guys, great bunch of people, just a few miles away. [link]http://www.geocities.com/okrc74363/[/link]

Thanks for the replys everyone.

Tailskid- I am learning on a Nexstar Select, then for a second plane I bought a Sig Four Star 60, and I have a Great Planes Extra 300s 60 kit that I plan on building. Thats quite a few airplanes for a guy who is just learning I know but this hobby is just too much fun.

Smokingcrater- I do have renters insurance, I just didnt think that would cover me flying the airplanes. I guess I will have to get my policy out and take a look at it. That would be great if it did.

iflyj3- I am flying r/c airplanes, I am just doing it at a full size airport. I couldn't find a club very close, but I found a guy willing to teach me how to fly so we have been going out there.

bhole74- Thanks for the link, I might have to go and check these guys out. They are about 25 miles away from me but it wouldn't take me long to get there.

Thanks again!

Check your insurance as most home owners type only cover a minimum amount. I think mine is $1000 of personal liability. One of my flying buddies hit a roof and his home owners paid $750 to fix it. Above those amounts, AMA will cover you as long as you are flying according to the safety code. The safety code is not hard to follow. AT $58 a year, it is the best money you can spend.

Ok, now I understand. If there are planes sitting outside at your airport, a model stuck in the cockpit of a Lear may exhaust the $100,000 they require of you. I highly recommend you join AMA. Even threw the wing of a fabric plane is not cheap.

Dan-

I think the liability portion of most HO policys is $100K. Additional increments of $100K are available at what seems to me a reasonable cost; IIRC, raising mine to $300K to meet the minimum required by my PUP (which pays in excess of HO, et al) provider cost about $30/yr. Surprised me how little the personal liability portion of an HO policy costs - typically well under 10% of the total.

Thanks Abel, just for kicks I'll check. It would be good to know for sure before the fact.
