AMA policy help needed
Does AMA have anything against mounting model rocket engines on model planes? It may sound strange but i have designed a rig to use them but dont know if it would be legal.

Sorry, Charlie. Re-read #8. It prohibits FIRING a pyro device from a plane. It does NOT prohibit PROPELLING a plane using a solid fuel rocket engine up to a G series, PROVIDED the engine REMAINS ATTACHED to the plane during flight. In fact, Estes has had a rocket powered R/C plane out for many years. It has been favorably reviewed in R/C Report magazine.

I forgot what the new one is called, I have the strato blaster (estes). it's a fun little plane. slope soarer rocket glider or cox motor in one plane. :D

Keep me updated on this, it sounds interesting. I can think of a couple applications for something like that.

Estes has a series of plugged motors for the R/C rocket powered boost gliders. Aerotech has a couple reloadable moters for the same purpose.
As someone said earlier, it's perfectly ok to use a rocket motor on a plane as long as the spent casing is not droped from the plane. In fact, a number of perfectly legal r/c and free flight boost gliders mount the motors on a detachable pod that uses a standard parachute or ribbon recovery system. |
