Should AMA discontinue the Senior Citizen discount
On page 14 of the 2007 AMA Financial Statement seniors paid $1,941,283 in 2007. Seniors pay $48.00 per year. Now it is my understanding that they can $48 or more if they like up to $58 but let's just say they all pay $48. $1,941,283 / $48 equals 40443 paid senior members. Now $10 X 40443 equals $404,430 approximatey. Why did I say approximately. Well I'm sure there are alot of variables in the equation but you get my drift. There is alot of revenue here.
If you can afford this hobby what's 10 bucks and I'm sure AMA can use it. We are only gettig older and membership is going down. more seniors every year less revenue in the old bank. Edited to remove poor humor |
RE: Should AMA discontinue the Senior Citizen discount
It is possible they all paid $58.00!

RE: Should AMA discontinue the Senior Citizen discount
Insurance companies are very good at assessing risk based on age, sex, occupation, etc. It would be interesting to know if our seniors cause a proportionate amount of the claim payouts? I'm sure such information exists. A good number of senior members don't fly at all, which leaves lots of "statistical headroom" for the old coots who still like to tear it up!
If by taking away the Senior discount you lose 1 member for every 6 who decide to stay onboard, how is the program working then? I think some guys would drag up based on principle, others would simply swallow it. Is this idea "new AMA"? |
RE: Should AMA discontinue the Senior Citizen discount
Maybe but if they did it would not show up as a seperate line item in the audit they would all show in the first line under OPEN. My guess many paid the $48.
|
RE: Should AMA discontinue the Senior Citizen discount
This has nothing to do about insurance. You get to a certain age you get a discount for being older. I do not know what "new AMA" is.
|
RE: Should AMA discontinue the Senior Citizen discount
It does have something to do with assigned risk pool if you take the time to think it through.

RE: Should AMA discontinue the Senior Citizen discount
My guess is they all paid $58.00. Now, what's your point Kemosobie? and what are you trolling for??

RE: Should AMA discontinue the Senior Citizen discount
It might if AMA asked for all kinds of info from everyone. IE what do you fly, how many crashes, how long you have been flying and on and on. You are not going to bait me into the"Is AMA just insurance '' debate.
It is a simple question, Should AMA discontinue the Senior Citizen Discount. I am sure as soon as Hoss reads this he will be crunching numbers. I don't mean that in a bad way. I just know his posts and he enjoys AMA reseach |
RE: Should AMA discontinue the Senior Citizen discount
It is just a question and maybe they all did pay $58.
What got me thinking about was while in the DR office there was one of those business magazines and one of the articles was about Senior Citizen discount and the impact they were beginning to have on the bottom line. As the population ages there are more Sr thus more discounts. |
RE: Should AMA discontinue the Senior Citizen discount
OK, I'll accept it's just a simple question, not attempting to stir up anything. The point is well taken, the population is getting older. The folks who have been funding the Entitlement Programs for the last 30 or so years are now getting to the age when they can begin to cash in the chips they have been accumulating over the years. Me included, starting last month. The sad part is, including the Military Budget and the Entitlement Programs, we have spent a large part of the US annual budget!!! Yes, many seniors can afford an extra $10.00 per year to remain a member of the AMA, and it might put a few hundred thousand in the kitty, but what benefit would come from that? As long as the AMA continues to pour our dollars down the magazine pit, I don't believe they understand what the current economy is doing to the hobby. I would gladly pay a separate annual subscription for the Magazine, given a choice, as I do enjoy reading it. And to answer your original question, if they really need the money to keep the AMA running, not the magazine, then they should do away with the discount.

I pay my $58.00. I don't want a discount.

RE: Should AMA discontinue the Senior Citizen discount
If the AMA is still self-insured, it's not working with risk pools. There's just one. Being self-insured, they can't very well divide their membership into different pools based on fees paid. There's no life membership pool, junior membership pool, open pool, and senior pool.
If they want to give a discount, that's a business decision. I'm sure they know the numbers involved. As a member who is 32, I could care less whether or not they offer such a thing. |

RE: Should AMA discontinue the Senior Citizen discount
To address a few points from various posters:
"My guess is they all paid $58.00." Great, if they all dont want the discount, then they all wont mind us cancelling the program. "I would gladly pay a separate annual subscription for the Magazine, given a choice, as I do enjoy reading it. And to answer your original question, if they really need the money to keep the AMA running, not the magazine, then they should do away with the discount. " Interesting that you brought up the magazine, when talking about discount Member Tiers. AMA has demonstrated how to make a Discount Tier by inventing PPP: Cant Vote/Compete to save $2 Choice of $10 Parkie Mag, or $36 MA Just use the New AMA method of Discount Tiers: No vote & Choice of $10 Senior Mag, or $36 MA Presto, the New AMA Senior Tier. <humor> "When eligible, I will take the OF discount" Good for you, supporting the AMA's programs like that. If nobody stepped forward to use the program AMA put time & energy into developing, they might have to declare it a failure.... and we dont want that. So thanx, for not being a Hater like the guys that choose to not support this AMA program (by not taking the discount).... If they cant support the ama here, how else are those haters not supporting ama programs? <humor> |

Besides the AMA already developed a program to entice the younger generation to join which has more margin than the open program, so that should save the AMA from doom and gloom. |

I for one am sick and tired of paying for entitlement programs put in place by the baby boomers so that the rest of us foot the bill for their retirements in their "private, you have to be old enough to get in communities." Heck, why should my taxes be higher just to pay for viagra in the medicare scam program? I would prefer to give a discount to those who earned it, namely COMBAT Veterans. Just because someone gets old doesn't mean they deserve to have everyone else foot their bills. As a side note, the only thing sad about the military budget is how small it is!!! |
RE: Should AMA discontinue the Senior Citizen discount
Seniors pay less because they fly less, tend to fly slower planes, and just crash less often. On average, there are a couple of seniors I know that crash all the time, but also many younger people. The AMA probably make more money on them at $48 because of less insurance payout. If they raised the price then many seniors, some who are uncertain about the health next year, are more likely not to renew.

RE: Should AMA discontinue the Senior Citizen discount
I don't have a problem with the current membership support structure. I probably won't take the senior discount, or I might and then add a $10.00 contribution. I think it's a worthwhile consideration to a fixed income that generally takes a beating.
The Park Pilot Program also offers a minimal expenditure for a younger group on a tight budget, or a tight budget in general. I feel the goal is to make membership possible. Now, I'm wondering why those of you who seek cost cutting and building income haven't challenged YOUTH MEMBERSHIP? How'd you miss that one? |
RE: Should AMA discontinue the Senior Citizen discount
ORIGINAL: MikeL ORIGINAL: Sport_Pilot Seniors pay less because they fly less, tend to fly slower planes, and just crash less often. You have only stated an obvious fact, but that has nothing to do with why they are willing to give a discount. They would not give the discount if the insurance payouts plus administration cost more than other members. They also give young people a huge discount, and if there was a large insurance payout for them then that would also cost more. |
RE: Should AMA discontinue the Senior Citizen discount
I've stated the only fact involved that we know. Everything else is opinion and assumption. The AMA gives the discount on the qualification of age only. It's not a "Senior and Fly Less/Crash Less/Fewer Claims" discount.

RE: Should AMA discontinue the Senior Citizen discount
Heh... I could say the same thing about any number of social and medical programs that seniors take advantage of. What's any of that got to do with how a private organization conducts itself? Nothing.
