The Good That AMA Does

Instead of the norm, how about we discuss all the GOOD things the AMA does for our hobby just in case a non-AMA member stumbles into here and wants to learn a little more about what the AMA can do for him or her, and what they continue to do for our hobby.

Please keep on topic and refrain from personal attacks or reasons why this or that is no good.

I'll start.

The AMA/CHARLES H. GRANT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM. $40,000 in scholarship monies are available.

For those that are unaware:

The amount and number of scholarships to be presented for the current year will depend to a large extent upon the number of applicants and their qualifications. Approximately $40,000 is available, to be distributed in various amounts on the basis of AMA modeling activities, scholastic achievement, and citizenship achievement. All applications will be considered and evaluated by the AMA Scholarship Committee which will then make a recommendation to the Executive Council (AMA's Board of Directors). Currently, the Scholarship Committee is composed of Bob Underwood, Chairman, St. Charles, MO; Jane Morgan, Scotland, PA; Charles Bauer, Norridge, IL; Travis McGinnis, Arvada, CO.

In choosing the recipients for the AMA/Charles H. Grant Scholarship Program, many aspects are taken into consideration. The most desirable applicant is one who is academically superior and also is a participant in many aspects of school, modeling, and the community. The applicants are rated in several major categories, including grade average and test results. High achievement in all of the categories is important for the maximum amount of scholarship awarded to an individual. However, a person who is not right at the top of his class may win a significant scholarship award if he/she is active in the community, or in modeling, or both. All facets are taken into consideration, and a well-rounded person may well be more qualified than one who excels in school grades or only in modeling, but scholarship awards are available separately for any of the three bases for qualification.

To be eligible for a scholarship, the applicant must:

have been an AMA member for the last full 36 consecutive months prior to the April 30 application deadline
graduate from high school in the year in which the award is to be granted
have been accepted by a college or university offering a certificate or degree program. Applicants are eligible to receive a grant only once.
complete pages 1-5, 8 & 9 and not exceed the space provided on any page (unless otherwise noted).
The Charles H. Grant Scholarship Program contains three other grants, which involve additional specific factors for determining the award. One was started in 1988 by the Toledo Weak Signals and is awarded to the top recipient of the AMA/Charles H. Grant Scholarship. The second is the Sig Memorial Scholarship which provides awards based on a combination of modeling achievement and financial need. The third, the Telford Scholarship, is based on participation in competition activity in the AMA and FAI classifications listed on page 9.

All the programs use the information supplied on the AMA/Charles H. Grant Scholarship application to determine the winners. In the Sig Scholarship, however, the scholastic information is not the determining factor. In any case, it is possible for an individual to receive awards in any or all of the programs.

They do what nobody else has the coolies to do, just people who say they think they can do it better. Oh and they do it not for profit.

Has a great flying site that will only ever be used by maybe 10% of the membership.

Good point Stick! I agree with you ... the AMA does intelligent things with their money like invests in real estate right before the largest real estate appreciation boom in US history. This in turn gives them liquidity and a source of collateral if/when the AMA would have to borrow money. Brilliant!

Well it lasted for a few posts anyway.

If only 10% use it then that is their loss. I make a yearly trip home to Cincinnati every summer. Next year I plan to take an extra day to swing over to Muncie to tour the museum and grab a few flights on the "home field."

Let's not forget the nationaly recognized and accepted liability insurance for club members and, perhaps more importantly, the site owners. Add the first class monthly magazine and you have reaped immense benefits for your $58 or even $26 for some.

The rest is icing on the cake.

Let's keep the thread on topic please. It's already starting to stray off topic, and needs to get back to the topic at hand.

Thanks for your cooperation

Sorry. I thought the comment on insurance and visiting the national flying site were on topic. My bad.

Robo,
Your comments were on topic. I am sorry that I use the "Fast Reply" button, which made it look like I was replying to you. My comments were directed to the thread as a whole. Sometimes it's a very subtle little comment that cause a thread to go off topic. I saw that above and I was simply trying to "nudge" the thread back on topic before it got too far off topic. I am sorry if you thought I was chastising you.

Provides insurance to cover those that fly that have no other insurance coverage.

Provides insurance which puts landowners in a covered position and makes it more possible to find flying sites without huge expenditures to purchase land.

Recognizes and promotes all type of model aviation, not just electric/gas/glow RC.

From this vantage point: gives petty things for us to recreationally argue, all the while giving many other suck-ups convenient delusions of grandeur by ascending within the organization controlling us…sometimes collectively or more sickly… one on one.

It starts with a number…then a class…then a title…then a seat in the office as the master of the RCUniverse…err… Wait maybe I got that wrong…just mister master sir…

Seriously…the above is all too often true. LOL

But there is the occasional Gem as we have now as Prez. I hope he can keep the climbers off his pants legs and kick butt on the sick-o one on one weirdo types that have infiltrated this organization due to extreme egotism of the ascenders and general apathy/conformity of the members.

Without the AMA becoming the one and only organization of it's kind in this land, you would have a scattering of smaller organizations here and there, each with their own sets of rules, coverages and fees.
