Do AMA plans include parts templates
Iam considering buying the Mambo plan AMA#24068 or Pond# 36F5 and the Mooney 201 (Tri R)AMA#29766 or Pond#74A6. Ido not want to buy them if the plans do not include parts templates so they can be scratch built. The last time Ibought plans from the AMAIwas badly burned so am gun shy and want to make sure what Iam ordering meets my needs.
Does anyone happen to know if those plans (or most of the AMAplans) include parts templates unless they specifically say they do not include templates (like the AMA#24063 or Pond#36F4 Mambo Special states no templates at http://www.modelaircraft.org/files/plans/pdfs/m-plans.pdf) states? Thank you. |
RE: Do AMA plans include parts templates
All the plans that I have gotten from them have everything drawn on the plans only. I cut them out and make my parts or templates. Good Luck, Dave

RE: Do AMA plans include parts templates
Hello Dave.
Iwas just trying to make sure that I did not have unreasonable expectations and wanted to make sure what Ithink I am ordering is what Iam ordering. I do have to have the parts layouts on the sheets so Ican either use them directly as cutting templates or make parts templates as needed. Thank you. Sounds like your not an experienced plans builder. Many of the old Pond plans were from kits and thus, may not have every part shown to simply copy. Most of these plans, however, can be used by and experience builder who can figure out the necessary parts that are not shown.

I have one of the GM Plastics Mooney kits. I have heard it is the same plane as the Tri R, but can't confirm that. Anyway, the plans are in 4 sheets and quite detailed, but no formers except for a couple right at the nose are included. The fuse is composed of many, many presawn former parts, similar to the old Royal kits. The cabin top is a large clear part, maybe 9" wide with an internal formed plastic "headliner". Here are a couple of shots showing the fuse construction to give you an idea of how it goes together. The plane could be built from top and side views, but it would take an awful lot of drafting and interpolation.

Sorry about the large picture. I loaded three and the all were horizontal on one line. Here is one pic per post.

RE: Do AMA plans include parts templates
When the AMA acquired the plans to the old Pica Waco UMF-5 (yeah I know they call it a YMF, but it ain't), there were no templates included, and none printed on the plan either. The Waco Brotherhood made these templates available to the AMA, and now you can have them included. For some reason, you do have to request them when you order the plan set. This makes absolutely no sense, but it's how they elected to do it.
