Default Ultra Stick 40.......help

Just bought a US 40. It's my second plane and am thinking about a OS 60FX. Any suggestions? Does everyone seal the gaps with Ultracote or Monocote in the hinges? The instructions say so. Also, will a 12 once tank fit in the fuselage?? Another motor mount would be nice also but I wouldn't want to drill new holes. Any suggestions there as well? Help I'm clueless?

dont put a 60 to much weight and power mine will go about 80 mph or faster never clocked it but it is fast.

Default Ultra Stick 40.......help

mustangace,
i have a webra .61 speed in mine...flew it again today...you will be just fine, probably happier if you did go 60 size power. we have 4 us40's in our club...50 size power with tuned pipes is the lowest power flown. others include mds 68, webra 61, thunder tiger 61 etc....the 60 size power is by far the favorite choice. just my $0.02...later

Default Ultra Stick 40.......help

My son and I both had this airplane. He still has his. We used the OS 46 FX in both with quad servo set-up. I have flown one with a 60 and yes, there is much more power, but I did notice one thing. The 60 engine sure made the nose more nose heavy and it wanted to drop on landings. Maybe I was just more comfortable with the flight characteristics with the 46FX than with the 60. The 46 FX seemed to be a better weight and did not have this tendency. The power was nice with the 60 and a 60 may be a good bet for your next airplane, but I have to say that I would encourage the 46FX or maybe the 50. Same weight as the 46 but with more power. Maybe a good compromise. May want to consider this possibility.

One thing I didn't mention. I lost mine when the wing plate snapped lose and the stick went into the ground like a rocket. Ugly. A friend of mine saw this happen and then added reinforcements on his model under the fuselage where the dowels for the wing fit into the fuse and also around the wing plate. Simple to do. he just pealed back the covering and added a strip of hard wood with epoxy and then added a thin enlarged piece of ply to better distribute the added stresses applied to these areas when doing some of the more aggressive flight maneuvers. Seems to be a good mod to help keep it together.

Very nice fun airplane. Good luck with your decision.

Default Ultra Stick 40.......help

I know there are people out there who would prefer to overpower everything but this particular plane's perfect combination is the OS .46 FX. As someone mentioned before, even with the .46, the US 40 requires a little bit of weight at the tail for balance. I have been flying this plane for more than a year with a .46 FX, Tower Hobbies muffler and an APC 12/5. The only mods I did were reinforcement of the firewall and landing gear. I also fuel-proofed the fuel tank compartment. This plane really shines when you keep it light and well balanced (especially if you're using quad flaps) and the OS .46 provides enough power to hang on the prop, etc.

I have been flying my Ultra Stick 40 with the OS 61fx and have been curious as to which prop to use for best speed. Also best vertical. I know you can't have both. Which 2 props? and which is best for in between??

This plane is perfect for a 46FX. It can do many things 3D except knife edge. The only reason I'd put a boat anchor 60 on it is if I were unemployed and had the engine laying around.

I run a Thunder Tiger Pro .46 on mine with an 11x5 prop....power is amazing...it will hover at about 2/3 throttle. Personally, I wouldn't go with a .60, since mine was slightly nose heavy the .46....I had to move the battery pack back behind the servos.

Have a 61 Super Tiger and tuned pipe on mine--Put a Dave Brown mount on the front--Put servos on the side in the back--Graphite rods to control horns--One ounce of weight on left wing tip to counter balance the engine off set--Battery pack where the servos went inside the fuse--Perfect balance--The ST will go out o fsight stright up--Level flight fast--Put copper tubing on wing where fits in fuse---Has a tendanty to burn because of vibrations--Great plane

I'll second the Irvine 53, 12x6 prop, use a light weight engine mount, maybe move the battery back, and it will be a low weight, well balanced powerhouse.... - Joe

I just bought one of these. They are great engines. I use the APC 12-6 and it rocks. I actually used it on a Magic Extra 300L. Pulls that thing around no problem and it balanced real nice. Not a very heavy engine at all.

Joe

P.S. I flew yesterday and I guy from the field was watching me climb vertical to set up for a blender. He just said "wow" when I was climbing. It was getting pretty small up there.

My Ultra Stick 40 has an OS 46FX with a Macs muffler and 12x4 APC prop. Excellent combination. Prop was suggested by my LHS and it hovers beautifully and has plenty of vertical.

A friend just flew the maiden flight on my US 40 today-Thanks Dave S ! I have a Saito 72 w/ on board ignition. A tame first flight and a whole different type of flying from a Eagle II. All worked well on the balance as the on board ignition sub c battery took care of most of the nose heavy properties. I installed a 12 oz fuel tank with no problem. Check the boards here for several good tips on building this plane. Good Luck with yours!

Great Planes makes a precision balancer that has worked well for me.

Hey seanpatsdad, just do a search on here for info on balancing it. The general concensus seems to be if you use a big engine in the nose, lose the lead ingot engine mount it comes with and install a light one. Move the battery back as needed and you'll be getting there. Searching like I mentioned, will get you a lot more good info on the specifics. Reinforcing the landing gear and maybe the firewall a bit with anything might help. It's a hell of a plane, but the ARF kit takes some tweaking in many cases. To test the balance just rest it over a broomstick and see if it's at the recomended point? - Joe

I have personally assembled and flown four US .40's with motors ranging from an ooooold fuji .40 to an OS .61 FX and its an amazing plane. Perfect second plane. In my opinion the OS .46 would be the better choice, or even the Irvine .53. The Stick is not a 3D aerobat, but a hugely stable and straight forward sport flyer, it doesn't need to hang on half throttle. In fact it flys beautifully even when its a little underpowered(fuji .40) - very scale like....

OS .46 - 10x6 - 11x7
Irvine .53 - 11x5 - 12x7

....and as always go fine if you really wanna hover

My US 40 has an OS 46 AX, and it's the perfect engine for this plane. I also installed the OS motor mount and threw away the stock unit. I also have the quad flap wing which is a lot of fun to play with. About the only improvements might be to reinforce the firewall and landing gear plate. I'll wait until I wreck it for these items.

It IS the perfect engine for this plane. I had one a couple of years ago, powered by a OS 46FX, I replaced the stock muffler with a Tower muffler. That gave me at least from 500 to 600 rpm's at the top end. Another flyer at my club had the same plane and lost the wing in flight due to wing plate failure. I did reinforce the firewall but never had any problems with the landing gear or wing plates. I also fuelproofed the tank compartment and was glad I did since the fuel tank developed a leak at one point. I just flew this plane to death and then sold it to a friend.

I have flown my US 40 with a K & B .61 twister and a ST .90. The model will handle the power with out any problems. I do use a four servo wing and I set my rudder and elevator servo's aft near the tail. It has very good vertical...and I liked the K & B .61 Twister best. It's a well made ARF and I would recomend it to anyone that wants a kick back model that is simple, but kicks serious tail feathers once airborn.
Soft and gentle landings always,
Bobby of Maui
