Cpt. Crash,
I heard a rumor that your ship was maidened. I believe the Edge 540 Community would benefit from a full flight report. I am very interested as mine is set up like yours with a GMS 120.

Okay, got some more stick time with the Edge today, despite again having to deal with less-than-optimal conditions. This plane is so much fun: more drama-free takeoffs, plenty of big figure 8s and some yank-and-bank turns at mid throttle settings. I'm still messing with the GMS 1.20 and finally got it to where it's pretty happy. Had to switch over to an O.S. #6 hot plug; helps it during low/midrange operations. Despite the chop, the plane just grooved along, and it feels intuitive and easy. When I move the sticks, it pretty much ends up where my mind thinks it will be. I'm still carrying too much speed into the landing, but kept it on the pavement and got to take it home in one piece. Given that it's so fun on a crappy day, I can't wait to fly it on a good day!

Outstanding! I'm gald to hear she's a keeper I'm almost finished with my Cap 232 and than I'll start on mine.Say just a suggestion  on slowing your Edge down, have you set-up a flaperon mix  on your Hitec Aurora? The aileron on this plane large 3" at fuselage and the elevators are 4.25" at mid point. "AeroPerfect" has a surface deflection utility" could be helpful in setting up your flaperon mix in degrees here a link, just remember to keep all measurment in Inches or milimeter's
 http://nsrca.us/index.php?option=com...ding&Itemid=95

I don't own a Hitec transmitter so I can't help you on setting-up your flaperon mix,I use a Spectrum DX7 with daul ailerons. I found  a link that could help. Cheers: Rich

im working on putting one of these planes together right now and plan on using a dle 20 but im not exactly sure how to mount the motor, or rig up the choke. or where should it be reinforced by the fire wall because of the gas engine. if any one has some pictures they could post i would really appreciate it.

Muddin Mavric

Hi I'm working on my GP 70" Revoler now and when I finish it, I will start on my Edge, May I suggest you look at that build thread in the ARF forum [page 151 on],there is a lot of good information with pictures on setting up the Dle 20cc.photo below is from wjcelhoun's post 3766.
he used fiber glass to re-inforce the firewall,throttle/choke set-up is clean.

On my Revolver I pinned the firewall with steel rods .089"dia x .500"Land epoxy them into place around the front firewall and will do the same on my Edge. I will be installing a Evo 26GT so I may need to add adition support on the firewall of theEdge,.Sorry I couldn't help anymore than this, keep us posted on how you's turns out..
Cheers: Rich

thanks for sharing those pics. kinda gives me an idea of where to start. this is the first plane that has a full cowl and a stand off box that the motor mounts too and the instructions are not as detailed as past model i have owned.

Hi Capt.

Was wondering if you had got any more stick time in and what you still think about it? I've been pondering about getting this as I have a revolver with a dle 20cc, but the canopy fell off while I had the plane standing in the house and broke. Great planes has had the canopy on back order for the whole summer. Sooo, you can say I missed the whole summer of flying, and now dropping the revolver and looking for something else.

Not to many people have these, so hard to get any feedback on them. Anyways I know you flew it, just wondering if you still think it is worth it?

Thanks!

Also was wondering if anyone has mounted the dle 20, what method of lining up and drilling the holes for the mount on the fire wall fif you use?

Thanks.

Intruder,

I still think this is the best 1.20 sized airframe out there right now. It's a blast to fly and goes together so quickly. With a DLE-20, it should be a real rockstar. You'll have to use metal gear servos and check the tightness of all linkages because this isn't a fast bird; we had an aileron flutter incident with my buddy's Edge. Still, it's a testament to how good this plane is that we were able to slow it down and land safely with no damage to the airframe. We'll have to swap out two aileron servos, but the plane is fine. There's plenty of space in the cowl for mounting your DLE-20 inverted like the setup Proteus used on his Revolver. Enjoy...

I have some pictures of mine with the dle 20 mounted up now but it wont let me up load them from my phone. Maybe i can do it later from my pc What i did to drill the holes for the motor mount was use the little dimples they have marked out for an electric Set up and layout some center lines. Then working off the center lines go ahead and layout and drill the holes for the motor mount.

Thanks for responding guys!

Cpt Crash,

Woooh!! Sure glad to here the good things about it considering I just ordered one this morning. :-) I went to a hobby shop tonight and got some parts to get ready for the build and the guy asked what is it I'm building. I told him the pheonix edge 540. He told me that I might have to do some work arounds building it, but he has flown one and said it was an extremely fun plane to fly and does it very well. Not sure of what kind of work arounds he's talking about it, but I'll find out.

Was it the aileron servo gears that strip out that caused the fluttering? Or the linkage came off?

Muddin Mavric,

Thanks for the advice. Putting the dle in my revolver was easy, other than having to mod the motor mount by grinding it down to fit the motor in the mount. The holes were already drilled. I've never had to line up the engine and drill the holes before which is why I asked. If you can upload those pics that would be great, but if not, no worries, I appreciate it.

Thanks again guys!

the fire wall comes pre-drilled with blind nuts installed and everything for like a os 120 mounted at a 45 angle. so i poped the blind nuts out. then got the beams bolted to the fire wall and spaced right horizontally. i then marked and drilled the beams to fit the dle 20. then before i final tightened everything i broke all the bolts lose and kinda tried to slowly tight everything at once to make sure it was all sitting true. you also have to cut a giant hole in the fire wall to clear the carb. i cant believe more people are not buying this plane to put a dle 20 on it. i have been wanted a edge 540 with a dle 20 for some time now. i knew as soon as i seen this plane in the tower catalog i had to have it. i have not final balanced it yet but too me it seems like this plane is going to need as much weight up front as possible. i think i may need to mount both batteries on either side of the motor to get it to balance with out adding lead.

Excellent. That helps a lot. Your saying that where you drilled those holes there are already dimples there? I noticed where the choke ends up. might be hard to do the linkage for the choke like on the Revolver. Wondering since you say it may need alot of weight up front if putting an extra servo and dedicating a channel for the choke would work ok. ohh I can't wait til it gets here. haha

Question, did you put the front cowl to it and see if it all lines up? I'm not questioning your work. I'm concerned and scared I might make a mistake. I missed a whole summer of flying already and won't have the money to get another plane if i screw up. So if i know something already, I'm going to ask anyway.

My Revolver was great, Only got to fly it 3 times until my dopy cat knocked over the plane at home and broke the canopy. Very fast plane. But!!! I have a feeling this Edge is going to be much more aerobatic. So, when Great Planes finally gets off thier butts and makes some canopies, I may get another dle 20 and have 1 for fun aerobatics, and the revolver for speed.

Thanks again, and can't wait until yours is done and flying.

Ameyam,

My revolver with the DLE 20 ended up around 10.2 lbs.  The edge is about the same weight, so I would imagine it would be around 10-11 lbs. with the dle 20.  But I'd wait to see the weight from someone who actually has the edge to chime in.

no the dimples do not line up for the dle 20. the dimples are for an electric motor. but you can use the dimples to get your center line. then measure and layout your holes off of the center line. because there is right thrust build into the fire wall the engine really ends up mounting off center. but in the end it will work out. i have not fit my cowl because it wont clear the motor, and i have not got around to cutting it yet. i think mine is going to be around 9.5 lbs. dry with no wheel pants, i think that might have been without the spinner. it could always get heavier if i forgot something. but im also running 2 batteries and used a sweet dual miracle switch.

Ahh ok I understand now. That miracle switch I was just checking out today. Definitely thinking of getting one. I was also thinking of this one because it's orange and maybe would match the plane. http://www.valleyviewrc.com/estore/d...ot-orange.html

this is the one i used http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/items...HDOTBLACK.html it might be a little extra weight buts its nice and heavy duty. im not sure how much lighter the plastic one would be.

Ok after seeing it, that looks sweet! Goes good with the carbon fiber landing gear. The orange one may look cheap. Think I'll stick to the miracle.

Like the thread a lotas you are building one of the lower cost gas aircraft engine combos out therethat sb a very stong performer
with some economy in mind
What size prop and brand are you using on the 20 ?
How is your vertical performance
Your ability to hover if you do that
Do you know if your 20 size gas engine has more power than the OS 120 AX GLO engine (that i hear is the most powerful 1.20 out there nowmy OS 75 Ax is a true STUMP PULLER for its size )
Regards Tony

here is pictures of what i did to get the dle 20 in there and i also had to get as much weight up front as possible it was way tail heavy. total weight without gas is 9 lbs and 13 oz. with wheel pants and spinner and an apc 17x6, thats also running dual bats. i could maybe lose the wheel pants to save some weight. i thought about running a single a123 battery but the problem is i need all that weight up front to balance it any ways so i would just end up adding lead.

Mavric,

That's a nice clean install on the DLE-20. Good luck on your maiden; I'm taking my buddy's E540 out tomorrow for some tuning. This is a great airplane; it will be interesting to see how it does with the DLE-20. In your pictures I notice that your wheel pants have a fairing that attaches to the LG leg; are those the factory wheelpants? Mine came with el cheapo wheel pants and heavy aluminum landing gear.

yep those wheel pants are factory. i am not sure why on earth they painted them red though. i think i may paint them either white or orange. im leaning toward orange. i kinda messed them up anyways, in the picture you cant see it but the instructions show there being a hole made in the outside that lines up with the inside hole in order to get the axle in there. but i looked back at all the other pic of this plane and no one put a hole in the outside. im thinking if i would have cut the axle down shorter i could have gotten it in there with out making a hole. when i repaint them i can patch that hole. live and learn i guess, this is the first plane i have ever had with a cowl and wheel pants, so its all new to me. the plane should be done charging now and im thinking about going and flying it, there is hardly any wind. i gotta stop thinking about it im getting too nervius [X(] . i just gotta go do it!
