Gee Bee R3 30cc
OMG I love this plane. I decided to build the 30cc before I dive in too deep and I wanted to get some advice on this bird. Make this a community build. This is going to be a gasser. I wouldn't dare insult her with an electric motor. This thing needs sound. No insults toward electric stuff as I own many but IMO, some things you just don't do. Smoke and sound is what we need here.
I need some opinions.
Engines: I am looking at a 50cc setup for this 30cc platform. My current choices are DA 60, DLE 55, SE 56, or maybe one of the saito 3 jug radials. Anybody have a good idea what we should do here? We need the best combo for prop, power, and speed and I wouldn't mind popping for a radial if we can get the performance in this size.
Mabe we can put a Keleo exhaust on her. That would be radical or even a tuned pipe.
Smoke: I haven't used a smoke system in over 15 years. I don't have a clue as to the best system on the market or what the bestsmoke liquid mix is.
Radio: I have a new 9503 sowe are covered here with plenty of channels to workwith.
Servos: Don't yellat me just yet but I have been looking at some cheaper HobbyKing stuff that is pretty incredible. If your not laughing just yet I am considering the Power HD 8307TG titanium gear servo. @ 6 voltsand have .08 speedand 300 oz of torque in a$29 servo. Am I missing something here?
Decals/Paint: I wouldn't be afraid to do a custom paint job here but would also like to consider some custom decals. I have made a few but would like to know some ideas on how to make some good decals for this project.
Idon't expect to put flapson this thing as from what I have read, it doesn't need them but CG seems to be a matter of opinion.
I have the plane on order but everything else is going to be up to the post with the best combo most of us can agree on. Give me some ideas, lets build this thing right.

RE: Gee Bee R3 30cc
I think I might have found a pretty cool motor for her.
The Roto 50cc twin will fit under the hood. Anyone know anything about this motor.
CNC machined cylinders and cylinder heads androtary valve induction.

RE: Gee Bee R3 30cc
Hey Condor060,
If that is the R3 from Giant Scale Planes, there is a thread on it and the 50cc size somewhere in this Forum. One guy in the thread put a DLE55 in his 30cc plane and he said it was very quick. I haven't seen one of the new Roto engines in person, but from what I've read they are VERY NICE engines indeed. While you're looking at motors, Don't forget about 3W. I have a couple 3W's and a friend of mine has used them for many years. Their only "assumed" drawback is that they are not as lite as the DA or DLE, but they make more power than both. Think about this, who do you think the founder of DA modeled their motors after? I think an awesome combination would be the 30cc R3 and a 3W55xi CS. My friend has one of these in his TF Giant Scale P47 ARF and the brute power of the motor is AWESOME ! ! ! ! I believe if you put the CS in your 30cc Gee Bee, you will not be disappointed. Another great thing about the CS is that it already has a red cylinder head to help match the plane......
Good luck and keep us posted with your decision.

COndor060,
Your prop selection is going to be based on ground clearance. If I remember correctly, my friend has a 24x10 Mehjlick (I never can spell that name right) on his, but remember it's a 50cc P-47 with Robostruts.

RE: Gee Bee R3 30cc
I was thinking about a Biela 22-12 or a 22-14. Plus I can spell the name.
I spoke with the guy at 3W today and he agrees with you. The 3W55XI CS is the ticket. He said to use the 22 high pitch props for what we are trying to accomplish.
Plus, I need to hear that loud Biela prop rippin thingy goin on.

RE: Gee Bee R3 30cc
OMG ! ! !,
I certainly hope the airframe will withstand that much speed. You may want to consider flying wires on the tail of that rocket............LOL When I first saw the 30cc R3, I considered getting one and making it electric. Even though it would not sound as good as a gas motor, I'm sure I could find an electric motor that would make the plane about as fast. Hmmm, just thinking about that setup makes me want one again.......LMAO
If you go with the 3W, you've GOT to post a video of the plane flying (with plenty of LOW, HIGH SPEED passes).
Good Luck,

Flying wires are a must. If for nothing else, that sweet wire through the air sound.
I couldn't find any great 30cc Gee Bee videos so ours will be on the deck, with smoke, loud exhaust, and a camera in the cockpit to go back and fourth too.
Wonder if we should do a Keleo exaust on it. HHHmmmmm

I wouldn't bother with the Keleo Exhaust, besides it will probably rob some of that horsepower anyways. On the other hand, is there any room in the fuse for a pipe tunnel ? ? ?..[X(][X(]. Just kidding.

I have the 50cc GB R3 with a GF55 twin in it. I had to cut the cowl to fit the caps. The GF55 has heaps of power for the 50 size Airframe. Swinging a 21x12 prop. Careful you do not over power it and have structual failure.
Cheers

oooooh Baby I'M GONNA OVERPOWER IT, YOU CAN COUNT ON IT.
She might need some glass in a few places or some frame work but the flying wires are gonna be singin

RE: Gee Bee R3 30cc
Hey Condor060,
Check out the other thread on the 30cc Gee Bee by Jimmychee. According to the thread, a similar plane is offered at Hobby King, but according to Gerry at Giant Model Products, the quality is not even close to the Gee Bee he offers. I also think Robart is making or going to make Robostruts for the one that Gerry offers.

RE: Gee Bee R3 30cc
Yeah, I saw the HK one and I called Gerry about getting his. I am sure Gerrys is a much better plane and he has a lot of work into upgrading what he already created. Flying wires and the oleo struts just to mention a few. What I like about Gerry, if you have a problem he will answer the phone and solve it. That says a lot in my book. His won't be in until early April so we are checking to see if he might have enough parts around to build one. I need to do a video on the plane in the next few weeks. If we can't get GMPs we are going to buy the HK one for the video. We are going to make a 30cc and 50cc. I will still buy GMPs 50cc but it would be nice to have both aircraft builds and videos with the GMP equipment.

OK.... Here is what I found out... They sold HK some GB's. These ARE GMP GB's......BUT....... They do not have the upgraded hardware, carbon fiber parts, NOR the service I can give you!!! So for what its worth, There it is! Just want to be upfront and honest with you all.

Gerry,
Thanks for the clarification. Don't worry, if I decide to get one, I will get it from you. I have learned my lesson with HK. Quick question, if Condor060 doesn't mind. Is Robart going to make struts for the 20cc size?

No, not on the 20cc GB...... Also... Quick NOTE...................... Hobby King does do a price match.... I don't have any 30cc GB's BUT....... I did lower my price to 229.00 So HK has to price match it...LOL... So you can pick one up for under 300$$

RE: Gee Bee R3 30cc
We will be building Gerrys GB R3 for this project. The HK model is lacking in a LOT of extras that Gerry is providing. True, it is GMPs ORIGINAL Gee Bee R3 but Gerry made the necessary changes and upgrades to the aircraft needed. Carbon fiber spar, Carbon spinner, oleo struts, and just a host of other things you will want.
Plus, if you have a problem, GMP will take your call and resolve it.
The engine will be here Monday. We have the 3W55 CS with the side draft carb and a 22X12 Biel prop.
We will start building this project next week and with any luck, have flight video that weekend. Everything we need has been ordered and should arrive no later than Wednesday. If we don't hit any major snags, you should be able to view the build and flight video at Giant Model Products website by Monday March 12.
It will be an out of box, complete assembly and flight test of GMPs new Gee Bee R3 and they will be available at the toledo show or on their website.
This is going to be one of the best projects we have had. I am actually very excited about this bird. I can't wait to hear those flying wires singing on a high speed low pass.

Does this mean we can order a 30cc from GMP and get a raincheck for $229.00 when your next shipment comes in??????
If so, I'll wait and order from you.

Thats sad you spent all that time and money only to have the factory do that to you but they did it to sig when they sold the kadet sr to nitro planes. I guess thats the commie's for you
