After reading the above posts and everyone is using a lot of down elevator, I assume I should set it up with a down elevator mix that starts at zero at idle and gives progressive linear down elevator input as throttle increases to maybe 20% at full throttle. I am waiting for my Spektrum DX8 to get back from the shop so I can set her up.

Set the mix at about 5 percent for takeoff, and have the screen for the mix on so that a helper can add or subtract mix as you fly. I have followed this process on several planes and having a trusted assistant there is a great help.

I am using the Evolution muffler on the 26 cc EVO, and a sullivan skywriter. Any idea how much smoke tank I will need in ounces. I assume 15 minute flights with 3-5 minutes of smoke on ....I am hoping to use a small as tank as possible, anybody can tell me about how many ounces of smoke I need to carry on board, I never have used smoke.

Just finishing mine with an O.S. GT-22 in the business-end. To help avoid any tail-heavy conditions, mounted the throttle servo on the bottom of the engine-mount box. Also mounted two LiFe 2100 Mah packs on the forward most tray (designed for the battery and receiver). Mounted the receiver to the underside of the front cockpit floor. Was also able to mount a 14 0z. Roto-Flow tank in place of the stock tank. Still need to finish up the aileron servos and get the wings mounted, so we'll see where the CG ends up.

How does the OS 22 fit in the cowl?

Steve,

The only issue with the O.S. 22 is an opening needs to be cut in the cowl to accommodate the header coming off of the muffler, on the left side of the cowl.

A preliminary CG check shows the CG spot-on in the CG range.

Here's a closer shot of the cowl with the cutout for the exhaust header coming off of the cylinder.

Hi John,
Thanks for the reply and pics. Looks good. Should make it easy to check the muffler bolts .
I've been thinking about buying the Tiger Moth now that Horizon has dropped the price a bit. Nice looking plane. Let us know how it flies.

Thanks again,

Steve

Steve,

I'll keep you posted on how it flies. Thought I'd include a photo of the throttle-servo setup under the cowl. With the servo here, along with two 2100 LiFe's on the forward battery/receiver tray, the balance is just ahead of the rear CG limit of 8 1/4", dry. I positioned the 14 oz. RotoFlow fuel tank right under the servos/battery (actually, it's above them when the aircraft is right-side-up), so a full tank of gas will have a slightly less impact on the CG than if the stock fuel tank was used.

I'm using the gt22 and planning on using the jtec compact pitts muffler. I'm thinking it should fit in the cowl without modifications. The muffler arrives tomorrow and will confirm whether it will work. Thx

That muffler does fit in the cowl. I needed to file/sand a corner of the muffler and grind down one muffler bolt. Look great!

Please post a picture showing the motor on mount and where you ground down the muffler corner.

John, I sent you an email with my email address, I'm looking forward to seeing your photos and installation. I am very interested in this ARF and in the OS 22 engine. Planejaw had to cut the cowl for his OS's muffler I guess he used the stock muffler and it sure looks like his engine is jammed in close to the firewall. The plane was designed around an engine (Evo 26) that was discontinued almost immediately when the ARF was introduced, and many people have apparently found it necessary to cut the cowl to accommodate various mufflers when using the designated engine (or its successor the MVVS 30) or even move the firewall. Strangely, H9 hasn't come forward with suggestions and tips on what engine and what muffler. So, I will be very interested in your progress. I have a little-used Saito 180 and I'm wondering if it would fit well in this plane I haven't checked measurements yet I've been thinking about converting it to spark and possibly gasoline.

Maidened my "Tiggy" this past weekend.

The O.S. 22 GT ran well with a Xoar antique 18X6 propeller. Good power and realistic flight. Need a significant amount of "down" elevator trim over two flights, to ensure level flight. Seems to "porpoise" at times, and I'm not sure it is not the incidence between the top and bottom wings. Full "up" elevator at the beginning of the takeoff run and right after touchdown, full up elevator again to keep the nose from taking a "dirt-nap."

I'll have to fly it a little more to get her "sub"-trimmed out a little better.

How loud is the EVO 26 with the recommended wrap around pitts muffler?

Have been flying mine for some time now. Couple of issues. One of the rigging wires snapped, easy fix. 2 of the Cross braces in front of the cockpit let go, resoldered. Attachment points for these in the fuz need watching as the material is soft and screws tend to come loose. Might have to open this up and epoxy some hard wood into these areas.

Yes upon application of higher throttle it will balloon significantly and I have to hold about 1/4 down stick as well as full trim. Have added a small shim to leading edge of horizontal stab, a blade thickness to see if that helps. Have not test flow that yet.

If it helps I might add a little more.

Apart from that it is delightful to fly. I have a MVVS 30 in the nose with the MVVS pitts muffler, essentially identical to the EVO 26 and pitts combo but with a little more capacity.

I can fly around at 25% throttle for 30 mins!! annoys the heck out of everyone hehe

Have you tried to use the throttle-to-elevator mix regarding the ballooning?

Only on my old JR 9XII. I have. JR 12X now but have not played with that feature. Kind of lime aerodynamic solutions as opposed tonati go with ones and zeros. More elegant solution shall we say.

Used to do machine code, assembler and pascal programming so have a little knowledge of software and system integration ....
