What other engines have been installed in this plane besides the DLE 55? Think someone has a MVVS 57. Just wondering about the variety of engines. I have an old Precision Eagle 4.2 (68cc) that is currently set up for Nitro. I'm going to convert it to gas and try it in this plane (when I get it). It's kind of heavy, but I'm thinking the extra power (and some rear balance) will offset that. IF it works at all....

Hi Mike
My wife can shoot video. My R90 had two dead sticks the other day, probably lean HSN. I thought i had it solved after the first one, but it happend again. I want to get that completely squared away before i do much more. That said, I'll try to get her out for video.

In terms of aerobatics, I like my Extras better. The R90 is fun, but not as crisp as the Extras. The R90 is faster - 103mph on a 10 pitch prop, so i should be good for nearly 120 with a 12 pitch.

The R90 flat spins well, but in a nose down attitude. I'll have to work on both elevator throw and moving the CG aft to get her more horizontal.
She knife edge spins nicely, and transitions to an inverted flat spin. Can generate about -2.5g doing that. I'm glad i am not in that cockpit.
Avalanches are graceful; she tracks well in the loop, and the snap at the top is slow enough to follow and not make your head spin.
Believe it or not, she does a very nice pop top, floating in the IFS at the top.

Revolver man mike - you need one of these birds.

I just googled DLE 55 break in and got a pile of results... the manual doesn't say much... most of the google links take you back to rcuniverse though... for my DLE 20 we just ran a few tanks through it and gradually bumped the RPMS... it progressively got stronger... unfortuneately.. season is over here for at least 6.5 mnths

Check the gas engine forum both here and on F*** G***. Gas engines for dummies takes care of most of the information you will need.
Short story, install a Bowman ring, use good 2-stroke oil mixed per ENGINE manufacturer's instructions, tune it for peak (not lean, but peak), and fly, expecting to have to keep tuning over the first 2-4 gallons of fuel.

Thanks for the info. What;s a Bowman ring? and, is it better to break the engine in on a stand or on the plane? Thanks again., Messer

It is a high quality piston ring made by Frank Boman. Best to break it in flying easy in the air. Lots of heating and cooling cycles.

You don't have to "fix" your new engine if you don't want too. The stock DLE55RA will pull this plane well enough, your not going to do any 3D with it.

Just install the engine with the prop you plan to fly with (I use a 23x8) and break it in in the air. Don't bother with the needles for the first two or three easy flights. You may want to leave the cowl off also so you can check things. After that, tune it, put the cowl on and have fun.

The needles can be set too lean from the factory and if you don't do at least a rough tune the first time you run it up you risk doing damage.

Though people rave about boman rings, and truing up the reed block for a better running engine, both would be optional.

I would also tune it, then break it in while flying. Some engines can run leaner in the air, so if it gets sluggish or quits in the top end, it may need hsn richened.

I'd keep it up high enough to make a dead stick landing until the engine has proven reliable.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to all. I just ordered a 50 CC Revolver and I plan to power it with a Saito FG-57TS twin cylinder four stroke gas engine. I hope I can install that boxer twin without having to butcher up the cowl too much. I did not find any where in my search someone who has powered a Revolver with a four stroke. This should be fun. Best wishes and good safe flying.

Happy New Year, Fellow Revolver Owners! I have yet to get the Rev 90 into my RC budget, but a friend has one with a DLE 55 and it flies beautifully. The 55 provides PLENTY of power - unlimited vertical - can't see needing more for this plane. I DO like the color scheme - the fuse (to me) looks like an orange shark. Right now I"m recovering from a Rev 70 \ DLE 20 crash (was doing a low-inverted pass and didn't hear that the engine cut out, since I was standing next to a much louder airplane). Right now have a YS 140 4s in my other Rev 70 (since I"m rebuilding the OS 120 4s that was in there). Love the power and sound of the YS 140, but it DOES suck Nitro!! My working Rev 59 has an OS 91 4s (just replaced the bearings) and in the other Rev 59 I'm going to put an OS 91 2s. Always need at least two Revolvers RTF! Attached are some pics of my Rev 59 \ OS 91 4s flying off of new snow here in the South Bronx on Saturday morning. That's the Manhattan skyline in the background. Was 8 deg F out, but only 5mph wind, so not too bad!
WJC - what's new with you, Sir? Are we ever gonna see a video of your Revolver stunts?

Airraptor - can't wait to hear what beast of an engine YOU put in the Rev 90, and what air speed records you're now setting.

Mike D

Hi Mike; nice to hear from you. how do the skis change the flying characteristics of your R70?

Happy new year to all.

Gotta get my wife out to the field to get some iphone video. The R90 is flying well; slowly moving the CG back a bit, which flattens out the flat spins. She is definitely a well-behaved airframe. KE is almost without any coupling; I have a few percent elevator mix in one direction only. My pilot figure came loose during a maneuver, probably an KE Spin transitioning to IFS, but I'm not sure as I did other maneuvers with her during that flight. Max lateral g was about 2.8. Max z-axis (pulling g) so far has been +5.8. No signs of cracking around the wing tube, airframe, etc, so I don't think I have overstressed the airframe.

On the DLE55RA (with Bowman ring and reed block mod), and custom JTEC Radiowave muffler, turning a Xoar 22x10, I have recorded an honest 108 mph S/L (Eagle Tree GPS), averaging 2 upwind and 2 downwind legs. Not sure whether I'll invest in a 12 pitch prop for her

Anyone else have Eagletree or other on board telemetry? Can you share your performance data?

Best

Bill

My 50 CC Revolver is almost complete now. All I have left to do is to fit and install the cowl. It took three pounds of lead weight to make the balance with the Saito FG-57 engine. Engine break-in is complete and I am looking forward to the maiden flights in just a few days.

Best wishes and good safe flying.

Roger
Are you saying it took 3# to get the CG correct? Your plane will be nearly 24# then, right?

How much does your FG57 weigh? The CG with a DLE55RA was spot on with the usual things in the usual places. I'm not questioning your build, but I would suggest that you re-check the CG, and recheck the measurement of where the CG should be. 3# of weight in a 21# airplane is way out of the norm. That much extra weight will definitely adversely affect flying and handling characteristics.

Hey wjcalhoun (Bill) you were correct about the CG. I was a bit premature about checking the CG - after installing the cowl, prop and spinner, the CG is just fine - In fact it is at the forward edge of the suggested CG. My Saito FG-57-T powered Revolver is now ready for its maiden flights. I had to split and then splice the cowl because the engine was so wide that cowl would not fit. It is not the best but will have to do.

Best wishes and good safe flying.
