Gp Giles 202 25% mods
Hey guys I'm building my giles 202 1/4 scale and I'm putting a poulan 42cc on it I know it's overkill but that's why we have 1/2 throttle, my Question is what mods is everyone doing besides the wings I saw a few links for the firewall but could not get into them . Thanks

I don't think you're gonna be happy with the Poulan 42cc on this plane. I have the GP 1/4 Giles with a ST G2300 and the wingloading came in just under 30 Oz/sq. in. I've also converted several Poulan engines (one 42cc and three 46cc). With CH electronic ignition and muffler, these Poulans typically weight 4lbs RTF. You'll end up with a snap-happy Giles with that much nose weight. Leave that 42cc for 27-28% aerobats.

I agree, your plane will way to heavy, with that type of gas engine. I was orginally going to put my Brison 2.4 on the plane, but I think I'll just wait for something with a little more wing area. So for now I'm just going to run an O.S. 120 pumper. Won't have the greatest vertical, but real aerobatic airplanes, don't have unlimited vertical!

Mine, with an FPE 2.4, balanced with my dual batteries mounted behind the servos, in the tail. With that Poulan, you'll probably need some lead back there, too. In the air, very nice, but then I'm not interested in 3D.
Depends what you want from your plane. I know a guy who had a 46 cc Poulan in a comparably sized Edge. He liked it quite well.
Good luck,
Dave Olson

Thats one of the worst things you can do to this plane is make it heavy, I have an OS160 in mine and it flies great. But to answer your question, I would definetly fiberglass the center section of the wing, your gonna need it, and install your battery in the back of the fuselage. Add tri stock to the formers in the wing saddle area fore, and aft.

My GP Giles 202 ARF flew with a 39cc Brison and I sold it after 124 flights.
WHile heavy, it flew aerobatics well and allowed me to place third in my first contest.
What you want to do is pin the firewall and glass the wing from saddle to saddle on the top and bottom. (I didn't do this but it needs to be done ->) You also need to make a pocket in the rear of the plane to install the receiver and batteries. This will allow you to balance the plane to about 9 inches from the trailing edge. Depending on your radio, you can do some other things with it to greatly improve it's flying characteristics.

Hey guys, can you show me a picture of the glassed center section? easy to do on a kit before covering but an arf? are you simply laying cloth over the wing joint and epoxying it over the monokote? Sounds ugly, or I should say how do you make it not ugly? Mine arrives in 5 days and I definitely wring my planes out so i want all the strengh I can get...

RE: Gp Giles 202 25% mods
I have had a GP Giles ARF since the days when you could get them delivered to your door for $185.00. I have never assembled it, due to the "Bad Press". However; thanks to Geistware, and others who have provided invaluable information, I have decided to get it in the air by summertime. I hope that I can retrive all of the info. on it that has been posted on RCU.
I have decided on a ST 2300, due to the current bargain prices. The OS 1.6 would be a better engine, but probably not $100 better. I have a 1.8 and 2.1 Moki, but feel that they would be way too heavy. I am not a 3Der and only attempt to struggle through the IMAC basic sequence. Geistware, do you think that the 2300 will fly the Giles through the IMAC basic sequence at the 5,000'+ altitude where my field is located?
Regards to all!

No pictures, but it's not difficult. Trace out the locations using the saddles on top and the cover on the bottom. Make the marks with a dry-erase pen if you're worried about the marks. Take your pencil-tip soldering iron and burn the monocote along the lines, it'll peel off the rest fairly easy. Might have to use some heat to make it lift, Next, cut your fiberglass to fit, and lay it out. Use thin CA, or brush on epoxy thinned with denatured alcohol to bond it. Make sure it lays down tight. Put the cover on the bottom and fit everything up . You might want to pull the monocote off the center before you join the wing halves.
Good luck,
Dave Olson

I actually own Geistwares Giles and I have a 1.60fx on it. it balanes just right if you play with the battery packs.
Here is a thread that will answer most the questions as far as modifications.

What I do is after I cut out the piece of fiberglass to install, I spray one side of the fiberglass with 3M spray, and lay it on the wing where I want it, then I use epoxy thinned with alcohol brushed over the fiberglass, works very well.

Matts right on the thread. There is great info for you and all the mod info. Everything you need to know about the airplane is on this thread. I can't say enough about doing these simple mods. Takes about an hour extra in the assembly process. I still have mine with many many flights on it by now. I have honestly lost count.

Bob Yeager - Welcome back from your trip. Haven't heard from you in a long while. I was wondering if you were going to get this bird ready for the summer.

Thank you, Roger! I really would like to have the Giles ready, just in case Summer decides to make an appearance in Wyoming. It snowed about 5" Friday. []
I can't recall what engine you have in your Giles, 1.6 sticks in my mind. What would be your opinion of the ST2300 at 5,000+' altitude?
Regards,
Bob

RE: Gp Giles 202 25% mods
Glassing the wing on these is a good idea but it needs to glassed farther out than the center section. I cracked two wings on my Giles. Both cracked just outboard of where the joiner brace ends. I was lucky and was able to land both times. A loud pop let me know there was a problem. First wing lasted maybe 30 flights and the second was less than that. GP replaced both without any problem. My last wing from GP survived till I dorked the plane. It had a couple hundred flights on it at that point. After the first two wings cracked, I took out all 3D throws and flew it more like a sport pattern plane. I considered getting another one but I ordered a GSP Katana instead.

Bob Yeager - at 5000 ft altitude I think I would get a glider.........LOL Just kidding. I really can't say what I would do except make the plane as light as possible. I have no experience with RC and altitude so this would be a new one for me. All I know is that weight can be a real problem. Yes, I have the 160 FX in mine. The Giles is really a small 1/4 scale airplane and the 160 for scale aerobatics makes it fly very well at basically sea level. I am at about 600' elevation in Al. I have read several post of guys using the 2300 with good success, but no knowledge of what altitude they are flying in. Good to have you back. Good luck with your project.
By the way, my oldest son is in Crested Bute, Co. He said they got about 3' snow over the past couple days. It's melting away with a rain mix and mild temps, so it shouldn't last long. Alabama during this time of the year is very mild with great flying. It was a long wet winter, but we have had very nice flying weather the past several weeks now. rain today, but good weather around the corner. I know this is just what you wanted to hear. Just wait....It won't be long until we have those dog day afternoons around mid July while you are having nice cool summer weather to fly in.

Hmmm... Kinda scary... I dont see wanting to tear up the covering any further out then what can be concealed under the fuse and by the belly pan... Guess I'll just try near the joint first... If this thing turns out to be junk GP is sure going to hear about it...

I didnt fiberglass mine outside of the belly pan, and its working fine, no problems at all. Its a excellent plane, no need to overdue it.

good to hear... I guess it just depends on how you fly and I bet a heavy engine won't help out on the G force aspect... I'll take it easy on the walls

I have a a GP Giles 202 with a Saito 180 and a 16/8 Master Airscrew and it flys wonderful at 5000 ft. It's not unlimited but a great combination. I also have the Hanger 9 Edge 540 with a OS 160FX and this is a great combination as well, the OS is hard to beat in dependability/reliability.

I know that you guys posted your request long ago. But I thought I'd provide pictures of my glassing of the center wing. I haven't put the rest of the plane together yet. But, the glassing goes out to about to 1/4 inch of each saddle. this will allow the glassing and the monokote I'll put over it to be consealed by the fuse but still allows it to meet the saddles. The saddles are quite wide and I aimed to make the glassing just short of the fuse. Here's the pictures. I wrapped one continuous piece of cloth around the whole thing. Its not the prettiest, but it won't be seen once I cover it and the whole thing will be concealed by the fuse
