KATANA Glow or Gas??????
I'm looking at one of these Creek Hobbies Katanas and I have a few questions on what engine.
Glow engines such as the OS 1.6 and moki 1.8 are light and powerful and less expensive in the short run. They do suck fuel though and glow fuel is expensive.
Gas engines are heavier such as an fpe 2.4 or rcs 1.8. Fuel cost is low. BUT it might make the plane too heavy for any really good 3D stuff like elevators and harriers SO MY FRIEND SAYS..
I want the low cost of gas engines. I also want good 3d too.
I'm oppened minded so give me a good response into what engine i should use??..
Thanks.

KATANA Glow or Gas??????
Use the OS 1.60 FX with a 18x6W APC on that plane. More power than the Satio 180 using cheaper 5% nitro fuel. This engine is a jewel. Starts on the first back flip every time after a good prime. Nice smooth idle and instant transistion. You will definately be able to 3D with this setup. Very little cleanup with a good pitts muffler also.

GLOW/SLIME IS THE WAY TO GO
Mines getting a YS 140 L with a APC 18x6 WIDE ,
This is an awsome motor /prop combo .
In my opinion a gasser will KILL this light weight birds 3D nature in weight and lack of power ..

Seriously. I'm thinking about one of these with an MVVS 1.60 gasser. Since the plane has such a long tail, I should be able to balance it with the heavier engine and no extra lead.
Grrr. Another Big Box.

light as a feather
Hi wgeffon:
Hi visioneer_one:
we missed you all at last weeks meeting. Let's go over the club motto:
I think a OS-160 would put me in heaven on this plane. If the kit can come in at the avertised weigh just like ALL the kits i have purchased they always come in at the box spec weight a RCS-1.4 should move it around quite nicely.. So i guess that means i better think the OS-160.... your thoughts..........

KATANA Glow or Gas??????
Hey Guys
I just did the review on the Creek Staudacher in this months RCU Magazine.
http://www.rcuniverse.com/reviews.ph...ew&reviewid=19
I used an OS160 and my Plane came in at 11 1/2 pounds.
From my conversations with Creek, all 5 planes weigh about same.
Having used this setup, I do not think I would change anything. The OS160 is not that expensive. True it does suck fuel, but it will run very well on 5%. It will produce more power than the Saito 180. The first flights were with a Pro zinger 18 x10. My next flights are with a Pro Zinger 18x6 (Better Choice). I will try the APC 18x6W next.
The 160 starts on the first flip every time and has excellent transition. IMO, I do not think the plane would have a problem with the added weight of a gasser. In fact I needed to add nose weight to mine, so a gasser might have offset that. However, with the performance of the 160FX, I am not sure how much more I could expect from a gas engine other than cheaper flights :-)
Just my $.02

KATANA Glow or Gas??????
Here's the specs:
Wing Span: 72 "
Length: 67"
Area: 960 Sq. In.
Weight: 10.5 - 11.5
This work out to 27 - 29.7 oz/sq. ft wing loading. Should have nice low speed characteristics.
Now what does the real weight come out to??????

KATANA Glow or Gas??????
My Katana should be here this week,I am planning on using the OS 1.60 with possibly a TurboJett in cowl muffler.Does anyone have experience with this muffler? Is it better that a Bisson Pitts?I want good 3D,with plenty of oull out power.I've Got a Brison 2.4 that I was giong to put on it,but I think it would be too heavy. We had one on a H-9 Edge and the 3D was terrible!Hover was okay, but Harriers and elevators were non existent.I hope the 1.60 is a good choice.

KATANA Glow or Gas??????
Hey guys,
I have the Katana with an O.S. 160 and the performance is awesome. I am using an 18X6W prop and morgan 15% fuel and it pulls out of a hover smoothly. I have all 8411's mounted in the tail and it makes the airplane very tale heavy. I have my 1100 mill pack above the tank and an additional five ounces of weight up front. This is also using the heavy hangar nine engine mount. A 3W-24 would be great on this plane if you wanted to do gas engines. I think it would hinder the 3d character a little but not much.
If you are going to go with a 160 though. Put the rudder servo in the fuse with a pull pull setup. This will help with some of the tail weight. I also suggest not using CA hinges. Use robart at least. These surfaces are the biggest I have ever seen on a 1/4 scale airplane. ALL in ALL though it is great flying and a great 3D plane.
If you want to know any more about the bird, let me know
