Default Jmar t-34 mini-review ARF

Well I went to Richmondsrc and read up on the T-34...I ordered and that was painless.
It was due in about ten days.
I had read the review on the richmond web sit, and was impressed..It was the "C" model and I wanted to try to make a turbo=prop looking airplane if possible.
This is a .40 size airplane, I chose the .56Saito 4/s W/ a 3 bladed 11X7 Airscrew.
12 days went buy and I notified Richmond....KELSEY responded almost immediately...
Long story short....The a/c landed across town..(FEDEX) at another address on a Friday.
It had rained all week-end...I was called on Monday buy the ne owners of the T-34..He said it hsd sat on their front stoop all week-end in the rain, and was soaked....
Well pissed, I drove across the city to try to recover my Mentor........
Plane was ok...they had wrapped it in plastic under the box....
The construction of this arf is not acceptable for me to print......It was made in Viet-nam.....The paint was leaving the fuse as I tried to gather my parts for assy.
There was NO possible way to install ANY engine with the instructions they provided.....Modifications had to be made.....I plan to fly it this week-end...I will report on flight next week...

Update:
Pics of this airplane now posted in this topic...Thanks 5

Hey FIVESQUARE, you need to get a World Models T-34. I'm on my second one and the quality is excellent. Have a TT 46 Pro in mine and it's plenty of power. If I get another I'll go with a 4 stroke. Good Flying. Jack

Here is my World Models Midget Mustang. As you can see, I decided to spice it up a bit (got tired of the original Navy scheme).

I'm runnning a pair OS 32s. It's pretty fast with these engines and it flies wonderfully.

I use an Hitec Eclipse for my radio and mix the throttles, so synching them up isn't a big deal. It sounds so nice in the air

I only have 1 major complaint about the flying characteristics - it needs a LOT more downthrust in the engine nacelles as it comes from the factory. If, for example, you trim it for level flight at 1/2 throttle, it really wants to climb at full throttle. Conversely, if you trim at full throttle, it will really need a bit of up trim at 1/2. For me it was an easy fix anyway - I just did a throttle/elevator mix on my radio to compensate. This seems to work fine, but if you don't have a radio that allows programmable mixes, expect to play with elevator trim a lot.

I've never had an engine flameout on me but I have played a little with one engine out scenarios by forcing one engine to idle. The plane is all they say it is in this regard - it just tends to slightly drop the "dead" engine wing a bit. A little aileron trim takes care of things nicely.

As for building it, the ONLY complaint I have is that it build VERY tail heavy. Even shoving my battery as far forward as I could, it still took about 2 ounces in the nosecone to balance it correctly. Otherwise, it was typical of an ARF in building ease.

One note however...the main landing gear blocks are pure crap! On the first hard landing I made, the blocks broke out and the gear slipped aft. It turns out the blocks (as they came from the factory) had the grain running fore and aft, making them weak for the landing forces. I ended up cutting out the wing sheeting around the landing gear, replaced the blocks with scrap pieces of oak I had laying around and epoxied them in. I replaced the sheeting, recovered the area and haven't had a problem since. I don't know if this was peculiar to my particular TwinStar, but there you go

Default Great Planes Extra 300 ARF

This is a pretty nice ARF. I still have to put the 1/4 oz weight in the left wing tip, but for its first flight it flew with the weight on the outside to be sure it balanced correctly.

Specs:

O.S. .46 FX w/ 11x6 wood prop - later changed to 11x6 APC.
Airtronics RX
4 Hitec HS-422 servos, elevator, ailerons, throttle.
1 Hitec HS-425 BB servo for rudder.
4-40 pull-pull system on the rudder.
Elevator halves are joined together with music wire instead of the way the book recommends.

This airplane flies great!

Default Show & Tell lets see some ARF's

Fivesquare, I flew the Twinstar also. A guy that flies with us brought one out with a pair of 32's, and was afraid to take it up on its maiden voyage. When he asked if I would oblige, I jumped at the chance. Having never flown a twin I wanted to see what the fuss was about. I wasn't disappointed. First of all, nothing beats the sound. Two engines humming in sync gets you pretty pumped. The Twinstar is pretty quick, not fast but quick, and is a pleasure to fly. Luckily I did not have to experience an "engine out" but Hobbico all but promises its not that big of a deal. As far as the landing gear is concerned, it seems to be a common theme for weak landing gear in ARF's. I had an Ultra Sport that ripped out a gear on first (soft) landing, the other gear the next landing. I rebuilt it all and glassed them and had no other problems. I try to reinforce all my ARF gear now prior to 1st flight. Back to the Twinstar, I would recommend this plane to anyone wanting a twin. Basically flies lie your standard low win. Came close to getting one myself but decided to build an OV-10 Bronco instead.
