As with any ARF wings to be joined, make sure to sand off the glaze (if there is any) on the inner ribs to give the epoxy something to hold onto. I also use a GP Woodpecker to put some tiny little dents into the inner ribs for a little extra bite.

To each..His Own....I guess....

I wish I had read up a bit more before I used the stock gear.

Would have saved me a lot of grief...

Hey..use the stock gear..you can always replace it later if it goes bad on you.

That would work well. I havent built the ARF version of this plane and my SS20 uses two dowels to hold the front of the wing in the saddle. Never thought of the bolt idea! I have also used spring clamps and popsicle sticks to keep the mating edges even. Along with the masking tape.
Bought two tubes of those brightly colored plastic spring clamps that OSH was selling a while back. Those things rock!

I just finished the wing.
WOW, I didn’t thought I would take so long to do it.
I took 6-8 hours just to finish the wing.

Here is some pictures of my first wing I ever finished building. What you guys think?

I hope so

Last year I started my first kit. But I got bored (I think was because I crashed my all-loved 4 star), and stopped the construction.
I only did the rudder, fin, stabilizer and the left wing.
After that, I stopped flying. 5 months.
Then 2 weeks ago I took off the dust from my first trainer to fly it. Just after I take off I realised how pleasure RC is.
Then I bought this ARF so I can come back do the hobby with a new plane.
I loving building it, so just after I finish I will continue my CG Extra 300!

Thx

I just finished the fin and stab. I let then dry overnight.

Now I'm going to put the elevators and rudder.

I think I can finish this plane today, depends on how much trouble I'm going to get mounting the engine

Here is some pics:

Following the advice, I already bought a new spinner (du-bro).

And as I said, a really want the plane with landing gear.
So I reinforce the mounts with TONS of epoxy with microballoons. (As you can see in the photos)
And instead of using one nylon strap to the landing gear wire as the manual says. I'm using two steel landing gear, as a precaution.

This is one of my favorite planes and my only 2 stroker. .46 tower engine and gear exactly like DragonHeart's. Same reinforcement on pants as Abras. I found the stock gear on our grass field would not hold up even after reinforcing the mounting areas.
With a .46 2 stroke , this baby zips along like its on rails!!! Good luck.

( the Tower .46 is fast but a real pain to get running right/ I do not recommend that engine )

I will use a Evolution .45

This engine is FANTASTIC!!!

I got in my first plane, a Arrow RTF.
I crashed the Arrow, so engine went to a Avistar.
I sold the Avistar, and the engine went to a 4-Star.
I crashed the 4-Star, and the engine is going to the SS.

2 Crashes and I still use the original plug.

I use a APC blade and it's a blast! I raced against a OS .46 (2 Avistars) and it was with the same power.

And the best thing of it: I never, NEVER had trouble running right. Even when I left the engine 5 months without using.
It ALWAYS turns on when I first try it.

I just finished the SS today, I will post some pics!

Maiden Fly is tomorrow!

(sorry about my english mistakes)

Thanks, bldrums.

Last Saturday I went to the field, maiden fight!

When I took the first picture of the plane, the rain started.

So, No maiden flight!

My first fly will be this Saturday. I'm very anxious about it.

Here are some pics of the plane:
(Still needs a pilot)

Just Did my first flight today!

Are there anything better than end the day cleaning up your airplane? (no crashes)

The plane is very good! It flies just like the 4-Star, but it is a bit faster and can do some tricks that 4-star can't. I'm very happy with it.
This is my first plane that can do knife-edge, so I spend the whole day practicing.

And I want to thank SkyDude, DragonHeart, LarryQ for warning me about the wheel pants.

They were right about it, and I almost lost my cover on my wing because I didn't listened to then.

On my first landing, FIRST!!! Everything happened like they said. The wheel pants got loose on the landing, so it hit in the floor and got back in the cover. I was luck that it didn't cut the cover.

Thanks everybody!

Great news!! I'm glad you were so successful. Next: the landing gear mounted in the block of the wing will start to wallow out and get loose. I tried to reinforce the block and channel but there is too much force on the gear. ( at least on a grass field like I fly ) You might want to try mounting a one piece gear by reinforcing the belly at the leading edge with ply and mount with nylon bolts. You wont have trouble adjusting the CG.

Good Job!

I'm surprised so many have trouble with the landing gear. My wheel pants looked scratched after a season of flying, but not too bad. I don't use the pants now, for I have three inch wheels for grass. For thick grass I had to bend the gear forward a little, otherwise the plane would nose over. I have a second set of landing gear that I have dubro skis on. Another perfect match of plane and ski size. Quite a few club members liked how well it handled the snow on the runway at our winter funfly. Kind of fun when you can land anywhere on the field when there is snow (who needs a plowed runway?). Tailwheel works fine on the snow, although I am thinking of putting a bigger one on for the grass next summer.
Anyways, I use a os 52 fourstroke on my sportster(apc 11-7 prop), and everyone comments on how good a match the engine and plane are. Good power, speed, and ability to accelerate away from a bad landing. Makes touch and goes interesting when you can accelerate quick and pull up hard. Engine runs just as good in the winter as in the summer.
I added a couple markings on the bottom of the wing near the tips. Makes it a lot easier to see on an overcast day. I also have a voltwatch inside the canopy instead of a pilot bust. Love how it looks that way, not on the side of the fuse and cleanly installed keeping the plane look clean. I still wish I could have had a troll head inside there.

NICE!!!

Land on the snow is one thing I never will do. Here in Brazil we don't have snow.

That should be very fun to do!

I have to agree with Steve on this as well. My SS 40 regularly flies off a terrible runway (chunks missing from the asphalt, rocks, etc). It's kind of humorous watching people take off...planes swerving this way and that trying to avoid potholes. Anyway, I left the wheel pants off for this reason (although I really like the way they look). My landing gear is stock, with oversized tires and it handles the rough ground just fine. No problems with the wire gear or the wing. You're gonna love flying the SS. Great looks in the air, really nice flying qualities, and great on the ground as well. Oh yeah, I did add an aftermarket Aluminum spinner.[img][/img]
