Default Pacific Aero Gee Bee Y Engine - HELP!!!!

I have ordered the plane. I also have read everything I can find on this forum and some of your sites about this plane. I am having a major engine decision problem. This plane will have either the MVVS 1.60 or 2.15 Gasser in it. The distributor says the the 2.1 will be too heavy/to much engine; but he did not sound like he was familair with these engines. Several of you have looked into this. Please , some knowledgable comments. I want good performance without putting to much engine on her. I would also like to use the engine that makes everything balance out as close as possible without adding lead anywhere, front or back. Which one should I go with, the 1.60 or the 2.15. Thanks.

Default 160 or 215?

I haven't seen either of these engines run, but the following might be helpful.

The GBY weighs about the same as a Hanger 9 or Lanier Edge 540 and either of those is fully 3D capable and has unlimited vertical with an OS 1.60 FX.

The GBY has very good vertical and will do all the usual 2D aerobatics very, very well with a Saito 180.

The GBY with a G23 is a pound and a half heavier than it is with a Saito 180. Performance with the G23 is scale-like and only mildly aerobatic because of the lower power and higher weight.

The best performing GBY's seem to have either the Saito 180, Moki 135 or RCS 180.

My guess is that the MVVS glow 160 or either of the 215s would be more power than you can use although the glow 160 would probably be OK as far as the weight is concerned.

Why MVVS? Do you get a big discount or something?

Jim

I have an mvvs 1.60 gasser in a H9 1/4scale Cap and love it. So I am familiar with it's installation and operation. I also have a glow guzzling Saito 1.80 in another Cap. While the mvvs is only about 75% of the performance of the Saito, it works very good in the plane. I think the BeeGee will end up a couple pounds heavier than the H9 Cap and therefore I'm afraid the 1.60 may not be enough juice to have serious fun. On the other hand, I don't want an overpowered hunk on the nose either.

Test flew my Gee Bee today and all I can say is awesome. Looks EXTREMELY scale in the air. It balanced at the recommened 4.5 inches. The elevator authority was rather poor when set at the recommended 5/8" travel. Throw was increased to an inch and seemed to be much better. Ailerons worked very well at the factory setting. Rolls were very scale looking. The engine I am using is the 3W-24 with an 18-8 prop. (The recommened prop for break in) This set up is perfect. Speed is perfect for scale flight.

Theres a man down in Tucson with this plane and a gasser up front. Saw it fly the last two days up here in Albuquerque and very impressive. Email the moderator "Gee Bee Jim Lynch" for the details.
