RE: New Giant GP Super Sportster!!!!!
SBrian,
Super, thank you for the info. I have just received my new GSS in his limp and I tries to inform before beginning the construction. I am above going to put a OS 160 FX. By comparison to your model, I think that I should put off the Landing Gear. OS 160 FX is less heavy than your engine gasoline. Of what do you think of it?

Change the landing gear. You won't be happy with the gear in the wings. They will break at the mounts or bend and are a pain to transport.
Just my 2cents worth.

The transport is easier if the train stands by the fuselage. For me this model is really more beautiful with the train under the fuselage, we could even believe that it existed....It is a tasteful question and tastes and colours, the world is needed for all. It is the charm of modelling

Check my posts on page 18 of this thread, post 430 and 432 are pictures of how I converted my GSS to fuselage mounted landing gear. It is a little work, but I think worth the effort.

RE: New Giant GP Super Sportster!!!!!
The beauty of having a metal lathe is that I was able to cut a shoulder on the end that was soldered to the plate. I enlarged the hole in the plate before making the brass fitting so I would not change the volume of air able to enter to the diaphram, the shouder only extends into the plate the thickness of the plate. The diaphram is approximately 3/32 to 1/8 under the plate. I used low temp. Silver solder for soldering. I hope this is clear enough, it's much eaiser to do it than describe it. The plate was removed from the carborator for drilling and soldering. I will have more pictures soon.

All the designers do not put the landing gear in the same distance of the partition firewall. Is it important ?

RE: New Giant GP Super Sportster!!!!!
Yes. It depends on where you fly. For hard surface runways, the rule of thumb is to put the axles directly under the leading edge of the wing. For grass fields they should be an inch or two further forward.
If the gear is set up for a hard surface it will tend to nose-over on grass. If is set up for grass, it will be squirrelly (unstable) during take-off from hard surfaces.

Thank you jrf. I learnt something today. Our track runway is hard, I cannot put the train of Sbrian (In spite of it is very beautiful) but rather that of jben.

RE: New Giant GP Super Sportster!!!!!
As promised, here are more pictures of my GSS, I made the blue and stars graphics today and installed them. I still have some minor things to adjust before the maiden flight, but is is getting close. I weighed the GSS and it came in at 15 lbs. It didn't feel that heavy, but I guess I have to trust the scales. If anyone wants a list of items installed on the GSS I will post it.

RE: New Giant GP Super Sportster!!!!!
The gear is from an old CAP 232 1/4 scale by Hanger 9. As far as I know it is no longer available. There are probably better gears out there that would not have to be cut. The problem is most kit manufactures don't publish the dimentions of the gear.
Birman,
I'm working on the list now.

Thanks-I just ordered a second GSS. Couldn't pass on a deal. Going to put a conversion engines on it and use it as a test plane, so i wanted to move the gear off the wing. I like the blue with stars, red-white and blue is always great.

RE: New Giant GP Super Sportster!!!!!
I installed a OS 1.60 in mine and it gives me unlimited vertical, I use all coreless high torque servos and a bison muffler, I mounted the engine sideways came out awesome, check out the pictures.
I also didn’t use the control rods that came with the plane, I went with a rod that was threaded on each end.
The Sullivan 4 40 rods are a perfect length, I also used their 4 40 golden clevises.

Marine,
Looks very nice, I have two questions, what is the brand name and size of your pilot, and what is the weight ready to fly less gas? Thanks in advance.

RE: New Giant GP Super Sportster!!!!!
I have been flying mine for 2 years now with a 1.60 OS motor and I haven’t had one problem with the landing gear, now the 40 size arf sportster that was the first thing to let go, the 1.60 motor gives the plane unlimited vertical and I mean it climes out with authority, I can hang the plane on the prop at about ½ to ¾ throttle very awesome plane with the 1.60 in my opinion, but you better bring some fuel, I can burn up a gallon in a single day. Have fun fly safe and keep the rubber side down on landings. O wait I did get a hole in the bottom side of the wing last year from a wheel paint, easy fix but no problems since, and no it didn’t tear out the block, just pocked a hole with the back of the pant. I like the things, what I get for using them on grass I guess. But stay they will.
check out the pics of the wing and gear.

RE: New Giant GP Super Sportster!!!!!
I fly my Giant Super Sportster off grass as well, and my wheel pants are starting to look a bit shabby also after two years. For some reason though Great Planes/Tower doesn't stock the replacements like they do for alot of other ARF's. I did build a couple Super Sportster 90/120's from kit, and they had some pretty thick mil pants that came with them, and were at least as big as what is on the Giant SS ARF. I was just hoping to find some just like it has on it. Buying a set every two years isn't to big of a deal if they had them to buy.

I had to do a little hacking on my pilot to shorten him up a bit to fit under the canopy, but he looks right at place in there now.

RE: New Giant GP Super Sportster!!!!!
Thanks for the information, have you weighed your GSS? If so what was the weight?
I have scanned this entire thread and didn't find any posted flying weights for the GSS, anyone that has weighed his GSS, please post the finished weights.
Thank you,
James
